Magic problems

They just break down more often on Carnival ships. Basically, if you cut services in the house, you will cut services behind scenes also.

Do you have any data supporting this (e.g. mechanical failures by line) or is this just, you know, made up nonsense?

We're sailing on her 7/21 and I'd be perfectly happy if they cut one of the ports (I'm looking at you, Costa Maya) and gave us an extra sea day.

Made up nonsense is all he posts over here. He is a Carnival hating troll that loves to hate on Carnival and troll this forum. A little research will clearly show this is not just Carnival exclusive and that Royal Caribbean actually has had the most propulsion issues as of late, even on their newest ships. Don't confuse his feable mind with facts though

We are sailing on July 7th. on the Magic. If St. Thomas is dropped and our itinerary changes then all the excursions I booked through Carnival will have to be changed. Does anyone know if Carnival just cancels the booked excursions?....if so, when? It looks like people are being notified only a couple of days before sailing. Not sure how this works so any insight would be appreciated. Two sea days at the beginning will give us the chance to enjoy the ship.

If the excursions are booked through Carnival, they will just change the dates on the excursions to the correct days you are in port. That is probably after they verify with the excursion operator that they have openings.

I'm on the 6-23 sailing and never received any email (I'm not sure why). I wouldn't have known if I hadn't seen a post in a Facebook group last night.

This is the third cruise that's been impacted. I hope they can fix the problems soon!

So where are your facts? Because just this month alone it’s been the glory, paradise and magic with propulsion issues and that’s just from people post on these boards. Yes royal does have problems also famously the Allure last year but Carnival seems to have had a lot of issues as of late. I’m on the magic in September and I hope it’s at least fixed by then.

The only fact I know is the Magic has propulsion issues now, and we are sailing in 10 days.

I hope we are cruising, and not crawling.

Sailing 6/23 and received the email of the St Thomas Port being cancelled. I was looking forward to this and already purchased a Excursion. I called and it will be refunded as a in room credit. She also said there is a chance it could be fixed by Saturday and we would sail as planned. Who knows at this point. I just need vacation !

I would guess they won't be adding back the St. Thomas port even if they get it fixed for the 6/23 sailing. They have already sent out an email, change itinerary and added an OBC to peoples accounts.

I agree with that. After sending out a change I would doubt they would change it back. The customer service rep said she didnt even know about the change .. ?!

Have they changed the embark time for Sat June 23rd sailing ?

I wonder if they will arrive later than normal to port Canaveral?

In haven’t seen anything regarding a changed embarking time. My guess is, it’ll be on time unless they have problems they don’t yet know about.

I haven't seen anything about a late embark time either. My guess was the last late arrival was due to the medical evacuation, not the propulsion issues. I really do hope those issues are fixed soon though.

We leave Saturday; I'm sad to miss St. Thomas but I did see the port fees already credited to my account, along with the $50 Carnival is giving us. Guess I'll have a few more girly drinks!

We're booked for a 4-port sailing on Magic in October (St. Thomas, San Juan, GT and AC). I'm hoping this will be resolved by then, but if it IS a motor-winding failure...as chengkp75 stated, it will require a drydock to fix. :o

If this is the problem, does anyone know how long it takes to fix? I really need my vacation in 28 days...

Just so you know, there is no "backup propulsion system". Each propeller has an electric motor that drives it, and each of these motors receives power into two sets of windings, each winding providing half the power of the motor. The typical failure with these types of propulsion systems is that either the motor winding itself has failed (drydock repair required), or some component of the control system for one winding has failed (can be repaired underway). Either way, that one propeller will only have half power, and to reduce vibration the fully functional propeller will be reduced in power as well, limiting top speed. My guess why the ship is going "very slow" is that now that they have cancelled a port, there is no hurry to get to the remaining ports, so they are slow steaming.

For those wanting an even more in depth technical explanation, as chengkp mentioned, each propulsion motor is a doubly fed AC motor with each winding fed by a cycloconverter. The cycloconverter converts fixed line voltage and frequency AC power to a variable voltage and variable frequency to control motor speed. Problems with cycloconverters can be difficult to troubleshoot, but usually can be quickly repaired assuming spare parts are available. Even if the parts are not available onboard, they could be flown in to one of the ports. Since this problem is now affecting the 6/23 cruise, it looks like this may turn out to be a drydock repair.

I am sure Carnival is hoping that isn't the case since Magic isn't due for another dry dock until 2021.

I'm on the 30th sailing and have been watching this closely. At this point, I'm done stressing. Que sera sera. As long as the ship is moving and the on board facilities aren't affected I'm going to make the best of it.

Now I'm hearing that Carnival is giving a credit not cash for flight delays. Not happy about that

I was on the June 9th sailing. I can tell you I felt like the ship had mechanical issues all along primarily because the HVAC didn’t work well. This was my 7th cruise and the first time I’ve ever experienced a hot room! There were also areas in the casino and on the lido that felt really warm! Other issue was the WiFi. I had the value package and it really did not work at all. After reading some of these comments I would also add that we really loved our day in Costa Maya! We booked with Native Choice and went to Chacchoben ruins and had a Mayan lunch. It was terrific!

I see the Magic is anchored off Amber Cove this morning. Does anyone know how/if repairs are coming along?
