Need something to do in Progreso

Is there anything to do in Progreso besides going to the ruins or going to a beach for the day. I have looked though a bunch of these threads and that's all I can seem to find to do. Is there a lot of shopping and places to eat similar to Cozumel? And maybe somewhere to get a massage after shopping?

You can get massages at the beach for $10-30 , depends on where you go. Shopping and food can be found on the beach road ( Malecon) area too .

But the port of Progreso is not at all like Cozumel . It’s a fishing town , water is not all blue and clear , and not as tourist centered as Cozumel. If you want to do more and explore the Yucatan, then taking an excursion , even if it’s just to Merida, is the way to go

Progreso is a tiny, poor fishing village. It is nothing like Cozumel.

I recommend you do an excursion, lots to see away from the port, not just ruins. Merida is a booming city, lots of history if you aren't into the Mayan ruins.

We are thinking about not booking an excursion in Progreso and just spend some time at the beach near Marina’s Massage (I think that’s the name). We want to relax on the beach, drink a little, have a massage then maybe spend some time at Mr Sol near the ship before having to get back on. My question is, how do we get to the beach area? I understand taxi’s are available at the ship, will they drop us off near the beach? Then how do we get a taxi back to the boat? I have this irrational fear of getting into a non-English speaking taxi and being brought all over the country when I just need to go a few miles down the dock!
