Decent motel near Long Beach port??

 Share

Recommended Posts

We're doing a side by side January 2018,doing 4 day m-f then a 7 day leaving on Saturday. Any suggestions for hotel with possible shuttle to and from port? Thanks

I guess it's time once again to post my standard answer:

There is a very limited area of Long Beach in which you want to stay...and, therefore, a limited number of hotels.

"A" List: The BEST places to stay are the Hyatt, Westin, Renaissance and Hyatt Centric (also known as Hyatt at the Pike) …These put you right in the heart of the tourist area with very convenient walks to restaurants, shops and attractions and easy access to the free "Passport" shuttle...and those ARE the nicest hotels in town. Doesn't necessarily mean they are higher priced, though...and you can often get a real deal via Priceline...

"B" List: Slightly further away, but still in decent walking distance, is the Hilton. Just across the bridge (on the same side of the channel as the Carnival Pier) are the Marriott Residence Inn Downtown and the Maya Doubletree...

"C" List: Slightly outside the prime area and/or not necessarily the nicest hotels for one reason or another, but options if all else fails are the Marriott Courtyard and the Best Western Long Beach Convention Center...The Queen Mary is across the bridge ...and right next to the Carnival Terminal...however, I am not a big fan of the Queen Mary--unless you are on there for nostalgia's sake...It's not exactly a first class hotel by today's standards--the rooms are small, condition questionable, etc. And note, you may even want to completely scratch the Queen Mary off this list considering recent reports of needed major maintenance just to keep the thing afloat--literally, that is!

Getting to ANY of these hotels from LAX, you'd either have to take a taxi, car service or a shuttle...Try Super Shuttle or Prime Time Shuttle or Super Shuttle's Execucar...From hotel to pier, some of these hotels may have free shuttles, but policies change time to time, so I would check individually with the hotel...All would be a very short taxi ride from the Carnival Pier...From the Maya Doubletree, Residence Inn Downtown or Queen Mary, one could even walk...LAX is 20 miles from the San Pedro World Cruise Center, 23 miles from the Carnival Terminal in Long Beach…could take anywhere from a half an hour to an hour depending on day, time and traffic…

One word of warning: Do NOT go looking for bargains outside of this short list of hotels...Long Beach is a BIG city...there are lots of different areas, some better, some worse...some not so close to the port or the tourist areas...That bargain hotel MAY tell you it's near the Convention Center or near the port...but it may not be...it may be in an undesirable area or location. You want to have a pleasant stay--stick to this list.

This area of Long Beach means you will have a large choice of restaurants nearby, you will have nice shops and picturesque scenery and places to walk and enjoy...You will be close to sites like the Aquarium and the Queen Mary if you want to have a little sightseeing... A cheaper way to Long Beach would be to take the Flyaway bus to Long Beach. http://www.lawa.org/FlyAway/default.aspx

Metro is even cheaper but is a pain with anything more than a 22"case and a tote. Not for the faint of heart, extremely 'urban' and goes thru some of the hardest neighborhoods in LA. metro.net

Both end up at the Long Beach Transit Center. Several hotels on Steve's list are within walking distance or on the Passport bus route.

Have read of several liking Hotel Current.

We have light luggage, and are not faint of heart. Still, I am reluctant to take the Metro through rough neigborhoods. Is the Blueline from downtown to Long Beach safe? Much crime on the Metro itself?

I am a little confused here...

The thread started with someone asking about hotels in Long Beach.

Then Sadie broke in with some sort of advice about getting from Downtown LA to the Carnival port. That seemed like a complete non sequitur at the time, but...okay...

Now, here you are, asking for advice on the Metro out of Downtown LA.

First question I'd ask is...What the heck are you doing in Downtown LA? It's not near any of the airports...and no one I know would ever advise staying there pre-cruise. So...Are you arriving by train, perchance?

Well assuming there might be some logical reason, here is my advice: DON'T take the Metro. It is, generally, safe...security is pretty good...but I wouldn't take that line at night. And don't get off by accident anywhere between LA and Long Beach. It does pass through LA's worst neighborhoods. Also know you will irritate the regulars even with "light luggage". Most people using it are doing so to commute to and from jobs. Also know that it makes many stops and takes a long time to get you to Long Beach. Once you get to Long Beach, you still need to get from the transit center to the pier. To save a few dollars, it simply isn't worth it.

If, for whatever reason, you are in Downtown LA, take, at a minimum, a shuttle. It will pick you--and your luggage--up from wherever you are and drop you directly at the front door of the terminal (or at your Long Beach Hotel). It will save you about two hours plus and leave you with minimal hassle.

Where did Sadie say anything about Downtown LA?

The Flyaway Bus goes from LAX to Long Beach and the Metro goes from LAX to Long Beach (Green Line to Blue Line).

The Green Line to Blue Line transfer is fine during the day, I would not do at 9PM or later.

The original question:

...had zero to do with getting TO Long Beach. The OP was looking for a Long Beach hotel with a port shuttle. So, whether Sadie was talking about the Flyaway bus OR about the Metro from Downtown OR from LAX, it was a non sequitur either way. A later poster, magicwander, brought up Downtown.

Perhaps Sadie misread it and thought it had something to do with taking a shuttle TO Long Beach...

But, even the thread title was "Decent motel near Long Beach port??" ...not "how do I get to Long Beach from wherever?"

i can confirm the hyatt centric is nice and very well located. you walk down a hill to the bus stop to get to the boat in the morning. super comfy bed and quiet despite being in a tourist area. i found my booking at an extremely good rate using a different forum that specializes in helping with some of the bidding sites.

lb also has a cidery, great society, which is delicious and within walking distance of the passport. highly recommend

Thank you so much for compiling this through list of recommended hotels. Sadly, for the 2 days we will be there, I'm unable to match up with any of these........I did find a Best Western at 1725 Long Beach Boulevard that did have decent recommendations from others so I wondered if you knew anything about that property? The closest Marriott I can get is in Alamitos or Torrance (special program for me) and most of the nearby Hilton properties are sold out for my dates. Thanks for your help!

I don’t like that BW...not in a very nice location. I’d stay in Torrance before that...You’d be near the Del Amo Mall and lots of restaurant choices. Really more suburbia than a vacation destination...but convenient and pleasant...and midway between LAX and the port.
