Flam, Norway

If you want to ride the amazing Flam railway, you should book this first, since the railway tickets tend to book up quickly during theheight of the tour season. The Flam railway is a five minute walk from where you dock or tender, so this can easily be undertaken as an independent excursion. We booked our tickets online at the Norwegian Railways site at https://www.nsb.no/en/?gclid=CMuvnubiitMCFYoy0wodZb8BnQ .

If that site is showing that everything is booked, other cruise critic posters have mentioned trying https://www.visitflam.com, and other posters have stated that this site has access to different tickets and sometimes has availability even when the Norwegian railway site lists no availability. Also, people have reported on the forums that when the train was initially sold out, they kept checking and eventually tickets opened up due to cancellations. Another option is to check with your cruiseline – it will be more expensive to purchase this excursion through the cruiseline but worth it if you cannot purchase the tickets independently. Please note that our tender was delayed about an hour due to fog, so although it will not take you much time to walk to the station, you might want to book a slightly later train since tenders are more likely to be delayed due to weather than when your ship docks at the pier.

A quick online search seemed to recommend that you shouldsit on the right side of the train on the Flam to Myrdal journey. The view on that side was quite lovely, but might also be on the other side.

In Flam, we had a lovely afternoon visiting a goat farm, exploring the beautiful town of Undredal, and then eating local cheeses (including brown caramel goat cheese) and a delicious lunch that was organized by Flam Guide Service (http://www.fjordsafari.com). Fjord Safari's booth is located about a minute away from the Flam railway platform, so you will have no problem finding your tour. You can combine this tour with a hike and boat ride along the fjords if your group is all physically fit. It was a very pleasant and enjoyable excursion, which I would highly recommend. We traveled in May, before the goats move to their summer farms so this excursion had to be individually arranged. Flam Guide service stayed in contact with usand gave us updates as they worked to book this reservation, and they also helpfully provided car seats for our children. Our tour guide was highly knowlegdable and helpful and this tour was one of the highlights of our cruise.

I just checked, and the visitflam site is booked for all deparutres from 9:35am until late in the day when we will be in Flam (June 15), presumably the cruise line has booked them all. There is an 8:35am departure available. Our ship gets in at 8am and while the itinerary says we are tendered, the Flam port schedule says we dock (and this year's sailings docked). So it is doable, assuming we don't dock late or any unforeseen problems.

The Norwegian Railways site only seems to be selling tickets thru February, so I can't check there. Any idea when they might have tickets for June? Will I have to wait another 4 months?

The Norway in a Nutshell site finally has tickets for June but the boat portion doesn't get back until 6pm and that is when our ship leaves, which means that the Nutshell is not an option (which really sucks).

We purchased our train tickets after we arrived in Flam. Short walk to the station first thing after we docked. The screen showed plenty of tickets available when we were in line. Cruise line excursion cost double for the same thing.

Misterbling please check the cancellation policy. If I could cancel, I'd buy the 8:30 tickets now and keep checking for later bookings just to extra cautious. If you dock, I wouldn't expect any trouble making the 8:30 flam train but if you have all day in flam you can push that back a little more in case they switch you to a tender.

KitKat,

The tour you took with Fjord Safari looks very similar to one offered by Viking. Do you know if this is the company that the cruiselines also use, and if so, were you on a tour that also included people from your cruiseline? Did you experience a large savings by booking directly?
