Dream: Suchi for dinner?

Two of my sons and DH plan on having sushi. Is it offered for dinner? My DH says I should go to the steak house with my other son since him and I don't eat fish. Is the sushi place just at the buffet or is it actually a place to sit down and enjoy? I wouldn't want to miss dinner with my entire group of 7 unless they were having as great of a meal as my son and I.

Bonsai Sushi is not a sit down dinner. It’s more like you order your roll, wait and sit by the casino. It’s like a free standing counter but there’s not even tables in that “room”. In no way, shape or form can you compare it to the steakhouse.

There are lots of tables in the sushi area on Dream. Normal height tables, and a bunch of taller tables. It is a good atmosphere for dining. There is a waitress that comes around and gets your order. What we do, is my wife sits down and orders her sushi, while I get my Lido, or Guy's on and then I carry my food down to 5 and eat with her when they deliver her sushi rolls. I am not sure what ship the other reply was referencing.

Agreeing with wms99. I think Megan may have been referring to the old Taste Bar area where at one time they did serve sushi in the evenings. And you did have to order and wait.

And on occasion there have been rolls and maybe sashimi (shrimp or tuna IIRC) available evenings on the Lido in one of the back buffets. You have to look for it.

The Miracle just had the sushi cart like Megan was referring to. We were able to kinda do like y'all did, I like sushi but DH doesn't, so I was able to get my sushi from the sushi cart in a nice little takeaway box and then we could go to the lido and DH could get what he wanted and then we could sit down together and eat.

I'm wondering if the Sunshine's Bonsai sushi does takeaway?

Yes, I’m sorry. I’m thinking I’ve got that and the Fascination sushi area all mixed up. Either way, neither is comparable to the steakhouse.

Please keep in mind that the sushi selections are relatively limited compared to a land based restaurant. And while certainly sufficient to make a meal, DH and I have found it is better for an afternoon snack - particularly in the casual environments where it is more counter style, vs say the sit down restaurant on Sunshine.

They are rolling out a new, higher end Sushi bar on select ships. But, as you may have guessed, there will be a fee :-) Bonsai I believe is the name.

I believe this will only be on ships that dont have the Teppenaki place, where you can get sushi also.

Bonsai is the name and I have eaten at them on multiple ships. Some, like Sunshine, have a restaurant area - it's own space - where you can sit in quiet and order. Yes, it is a fee and the menu can easily be found on line. A single roll is about $5-7.

Many ships are also, as they are getting refit, getting a Bonsai carry-out place. Like many have posted, there can be tables nearby. It all varies from ship to ship as to what is available.

I was thinking of the carry out when I wrote that......seems like it will be similar to the old Sushi counter they had back in the day, except for a fee and I assume better quality and selection.

Much better quality, like the sushi you would get in a Japanese restaurant in the US, and yes with a fee. The selection on the Miracle was limited to 4 kinds of nigiri and four kinds of rolls.

The old style sushi as I remember was they gave you a a little plate with about 3 or 4 bite sized pieces on it. Looking back, it was about on par with the sushi you can get in the little plastic trays in the grocery store. Granted back then, my experience with sushi was very limited and it was a real treat, present day me probably would pass on it.

Yep, that was it. Not great, but ok and free :)

Not even sure when they disappeared? I kind of forgot about it and then realized I hadn't seen the sushi bar for a while...must be what 4-5 years ago?

I want to say it was still there when I was on the Celebration in 2008, but it wasn't there in 2010 on the Fascination. After that we didn't cruise for about 7 years, by then the taste bar was there.

On the Dream the sushi is located in a side of a desk with no controlled access so there are people coming and going. It is casual but the staff very friendly. We liked sitting at the bar overlooking the preparation area. There are videos on YouTube that show the area.

I want to say 2012 is the last time time I can really remember....

Great to know. My son and I will just find some food from one of the many other food venues and we will do this for lunch.

Although it's not a cart, they will box it up for you to go. I was just there a couple weeks ago and was able to get my roll to go. :)

Also, on the DREAM, right outside of the sushi area is Guy's BBQ joint. and before someone else says, yes it is not as good as the BBQ you get in your hometown from your favorite place, but for the middle of a big pond, it's pretty good. Sushi and BBQ is sounding really good to me right now.

If it's the same BBQ they have on the Conquest and the Splendor, than I have had it. It is pretty good, as I am not a big fan of BBQ, but I like the fact that it doesn't come pre-doused with sauce. I also did not care for the potato salad at all.
