Singleworld?

I stumbled on this thread where Dominic(k) O'Carroll was mentioned as a SingleWorld rep and I wonder if anyone knows if this is the same person who went overboard last week on a ship I was on, the CDF Horizon?

Its a slightly unusual name.

I never sailed with Dominic, but all I can say is the age given for the missing passenger is close to what he would be now. Will see if I have old brochures from Singleworld to see how he spelled his name and if he was Irish, or just had an Irish name.

Hello out there to all former Singleworld Travelers.

For those who subscribe, we have read recent posts about 2 of the former escorts of Singleworld who have died.

I want to suggest that for those of us who have many fond memories of our time with Singleworld, and now know that 2 of the favorite hosts have died,( yes it has been confirmed that Dominic was the cruise ship passenger who went overboard a few weeks ago) would anyone who knew Dawson Wallace or Dominic O'Carrol post either pictures or reminisce about them in this thread ( also in the case of Dawson, how he died) as a tribute of to them and our fun times with Singleworld.

I will start.

The year was 1984, the ship was the Home Line's M.V. Atlantic from NYC to Bermuda. It was my first cruise and Dawson was the host. We were a small group, about 13 people, so we all got to know each other well. The first day in Bermuda,Singleworld somehow had scheduled 2 excursions at the same time. Yet we only had one escort. The night before we docked , Dawson mentioned this at dinner, and didn't know how it could be done, but he didn't want to cancel either since both had people booked on each. Having heard this, I mentioned that I had just changed professions from being a travel agent and group tour escort, and also had been a horseback rider all my life (that was one of the 2 excursions). Dawson asked to meet with me after dinner, and he asked if I would escort the riding excursion!!!!!!! To say the least, I was apprehensive because I had never been to Bermuda. However, he gave me all the information on where to go, how long it was, how to get back to the ship, and off I was at 7AM the next morning as a Singleworld escort!!!!! What a memory for a first cruise!!!

I hope others will share specific memories of Dominic and Dawson so we can all remember for a few minutes, these great guys and the great times with Singleworld!!!

Thanks,

Lynn

PS I tried to post a pic, but it didn't work!!!

FYI, I am going on my 30th cruise this summer.......to Bermuda of all places. LOL

To all Singleworld people that knew Dominic OCarroll.

Dominic was my mums brother. If you have any information regarding Dom or photos, please let me know. Example: Where he lived before he died, what he did over the last 5 years + any photos. Anything at all would be appreciated.

I did Rotterdam in both 1977 and 1978 with singleworld, both times it had 1 day in Bermuda and 1 day in Nassau, in 1980 took another HAL ship to Bermuda. Have done Bermuda a couple of times since including Veendam a couple of years ago

I am a writer currently working on my next novel, Jamaican Farewell (www.JamaicanFarewell.com), a murder mystery set on a cruise ship (the interior of which will be the S/S Norway). I like to pepper my writing with real locations and real people. I am currently writing a scene at Coconuts Bar and Grill in St. Thomas where some cruise ship passengers arrive, all calling out for the bar’s signature drink, the Backstreet Bushwhacker. I remember Dominic O’Carroll telling me on many occasions that he was the first one to mix that drink at Coconuts, so, in the scene, I have a native explaining to the imbibing group that Dominic invented the drink back in the 1980s. Trying to determine if Dominic had a “K” at the end of his name, I performed several Internet searches where I stumbled across the news story of him going overboard. In my mind, I knew it had to be him—how could it be otherwise?—and then I found this thread that confirmed it. It is heartbreaking to learn of his demise, but it just adds to the mystery of the man and somehow seems appropriate. At least he will live on in our memories and soon on the pages of my upcoming novel. Perhaps a Bushwhacker in his honor would be appropriate.

Dave, We were all very sad about Dominic but he does have relatives that may have objections to using his name in the context. I don't understand why, but they could. His niece posted on this thread and I would suggest you contact her, just as a courtesy.

Mark, it is 2017 and quite some time since you posted your thread about "Singleworld". I finally got a video up on Youtube of a 1981 cruise on the SS Oceanic thqt I booked through 'Singleworld". If you are interested, Tthere is a link here on cruisecritic which is labelled:

SS Oceanic Cruise to Bermuda and The Bahamas - July 18, 1981.

As a former Singleworld group leader I wanted to thank all of you for nice comments and great memories.   My name is Jeff (or Jeffrey) and I worked for five summers as a Singleworld group leader onboard Norway, Mardi Gras, Festivale, Holiday, Celebration, Jubilee, Sovereign of the Seas, Skyward, Rotterdam, Carla C, Oceanic, Atlantic, Veendam and Volendam.   (Probably forgot one or two).   I spent most of my time on the Norway, Veendam, Oceanic and Atlantic - usually sailing NYC to Bermuda but also lots in the Caribbean.    The passengers made this the best job on earth (still can't believe they paid me to do it) and I made my career in the cruise industry now working as a maritime attorney representing some of these same cruise lines.    I still get occasional Christmas cards from some of my former passengers - THANK YOU ALL FOR THE BEST JOB ON EARTH!!!

I believe I sailed with Jeff , did over a dozen cruises with singleworld starting in 1977 ending on 1990. Did Norway 7 times and many of the other ships mentioned, got engaged in 1990 so no more single world after that, but girlfriend later wife also loved those cruises , got engaged on sovereign of the seas 1990 on a single world cruise.

I used Singleword for my first cruise. On the Carnival Celebration, back in 1987.  I think we were the 3rd cruise out of port. My travel agent booked me an a friend in an inside cabin with 2 other people we never met. Think about that, and would anyone do that today? Lucky for us, one of the guys had to eat at specific times, so he was always leaving the room before we needed to get ready for dinner. I had a great time, didn't take another cruise until I was married and had kids.

I’m very late to the party. How I came upon this thread is still a mystery, but Dominick came so strong into my head the other night. I’m terribly sad to read of his passing. He was my friend.. dated I guess you could say, 1990-91. But time and life pulled us in different directions. You meet people for a reason, a season or a life time.. he was my reason for working on cruise ships for 12 years and living in Miami. Every now and again I would think of him, but you blink and fast forward 30 years. I dug out an old photo when he surprised me with a spontaneous trip on SeaEscape. Heartbroken

As a former Singleworld Cruises tour escort, I was saddened to read this post and learn of Dominick's passing.  He was a true legend onboard for many years and I was proud to work with him.   Wishing all my Singleworld friends calm seas and welcome shores on all your future voyages.   Best regards, Jeffrey Maltzman

Aloha SingleWorld Cruise & Tour gang -

Wow! What an adventure life is!

Who ever dreamed we’d be where we are today? Life is upside down and sideways. But we will emerge somehow and stay afloat.

Guess what ?!? I posted a FB group for your picture uploads and stories! Please request a join!

We had some wild times out there in the world. Right ?!?

I hope you all feel as blessed as I do , from all those experiences.

I went on to work for the largest group incentive travel company in Hawaii, and then Expedia bought me with the package! So I was a Concierge in Waikiki forever. I also worked for Campbell First Class Cruises as a world tour escort. Last group : Europe 2015.

So here I am again, itching to see the rest of the world, itching to have as many friends as my time on this planet will allow.

Lets cruise again someday soon!

I for one will start with my island home.

Where I now have an off grid simple life as a farm gal!

Who knew ? Right ! 🤣🕉😉

Sending out much love! 💜

My wife and I would like to contribute a quick note to pay our respect to Dominick

We met on a Singles World Cruise, either the NCL Starward or Skyward out of Miami on May 13, 1984.

My wife was from NJ/NY and me from Michigan.  It must have been divine intervention and/or Dominick's seating map that we were assigned to sit across from each other at dinners.

Our life really did turn out as one of those silly Love Boat episodes as it was love at first sight for me.  A few months later for Ginny but she married me 2 years later and we will celebrate our 35th anniversary this May.

I am bit worried about going on another cruise as every time I board a ship I fall in love.

But seriously we appreciate Singles World and the lovely person Dominick was.  Thank you and we will remember you Dominick.

Ginny and  Michael
