I will be heading out on a 28-day cruise which visits include Pago Pago and Apia. Do these two locations take US currency or would I be wise to pick up some local currency before leaving on the trip?

Both are US territories. US dollar is OK.

Nope. Only Pago Pago is US territory.

Apia (in Samoa, formerly Western Samoa) was NZ territory until independence in 1962.

The currency is the Tala, currently worth about US$0.40.

Dollars from US, Australia and New Zealand are freely accepted. Although as usual, the exchange rate will be terrible.

Interestingly, although Apia & Pago Pago are only 125km apart, Apia is a day ahead of Pago Pago.

Samoa is currently on daylight saving time (GMT +14) and is therefore one of the first counties in the world to welcome a new day.

American Samoa is GMT -11.

As Sinbad said the currency in Samoa is the Tala.

If you wish to use local currency whilst there it should be reasonably easy to find a currency exchange to get some when there.
