Grand Princess in April

Hello! Arriving in Hawaii on the Grand on the April 14th sailing and looking for some information from more experienced Hawaiian travellers. We would like to know if there will be cabs at the port looking to take passengers on short island tours? We have been on many Caribbean voyages and we have always been able to do this there - but I've been reading that the ports in Hawaii are a bit different. We aren't interested in a formal 6-8 hour tour - aren't history buffs - but do like to see the sights and spend time with the locals as well as checking out the beaches. Wondering if we can just wing it and wait until we arrive to arrange a cab for a few hours or if we need to pre-book something now? Any tips/advice is appreciated!

On Maui at least, do not expect any cab tour people to be waiting. It is usually (and wisely) suggested that you have your tours and/or rental car arranged in advance of your arrival. For the most part, any touring would be scenic and not formal historical tours.

Just curious, but what do you mean by "spend time with the locals"?

Thanks for your response. We enjoy seeing and talking to people in the towns and hanging out in the local markets and restaurants.:)

For some reason it didn't occur to us until now that you will be tendering in at Lahaina instead of docking at Kahului. We spoke more for the Kahului area in our answer and can't really comment on getting a tour at the dock in Lahaina. The tender will let you off right at the banyan tree, as you may know, and you can walk the length of Front Street and back and find lots of people to talk to - though largely tourists. If you have the time, rent a car and go exploring. Maui is car-friendly unless you go somewhere way off the beaten track. What day will you be on Maui? If you are foodies are will be here on Wednesday or Friday that month, we can recommend a special (sort of expensive but exclusive) lunch spot.
