mlmdaisy Posted October 16, 2017 #1 Share Posted October 16, 2017 We'll be on the Windstar in December and haven't seen anything to do in Balboa that we feel we need to commit to before we leave. Is this a port where we will be able to negotiate with a local operator when we get off the boat? Otherwise, does anyone have a recommendation for that port? We're much more confidant finding activities in Quepos and Puerto Jiminez but I'd still be grateful for recent recommendations. Thanks!
BillB48 Posted October 16, 2017 #2 Share Posted October 16, 2017 Pretty sure your stop at Balboa will actually be at Ft. Amador which is a tender port located on several islands just off shore connected to the mainland by a causeway. There should not be any problem arranging for a tour once you reach shore, just agree on a price beforehand and make sure the cabbie's English skills are good enough for you. The Frank Gehry Biodiversity Museum is fairly close, located at the foot of the causeway on the mainland. You could consider a tour of Panama City that would include the ruins of Old Panama and the Casco Antiguo. A visit to the Miraflores Locks visitor's center might be something to consider. You may be able to combine a couple of those into one tour.
mlmdaisy Posted October 16, 2017 Author #3 Share Posted October 16, 2017 Thank you. We've negotiated good generic tours on many Caribbean islands but weren't sure that the same type of opportunity existed in Panama.
Ski Mom 2 Posted October 28, 2017 #4 Share Posted October 28, 2017 We stayed in Old Panama for a few days prior to our Wind Star cruise a few years ago. The old city is very walkable and pretty cool. You could arrange to take a taxi and spend the day on your own walking around the old city. Lots of shops and restaurants and things to see. swedish weave Posted November 1, 2017 #5 Share Posted November 1, 2017 It has been a few years since we were at Ft Amador, but we had a HOHO bus that stopped right outside the port building and went through the city to Miraflores locks. We got a good look at the area with that trip.
