Do you get any comps on NCL?

Just got off NCL Pearl 8 day Alaska cruise. I only lost $10k so they would NOT comp me a $95 facial/shave. They said I didn't have enough play. They did upgrade my player's card though. YEAH!!!!! I guess now you must play around $20k for such a valuable a comp. These jerks convinced me that I shouldn't cruise NCL again. NCL passed out "vacation hero" comment cards to of course tell them about the crew member that went above and beyond.

I said my hero was any member of the crew other than the casino hosts. I'm not normally an ******* about bad service but this is a case of all of them should be fired and barred from any type of casino job or in any type of hospitality position.

You gambled/lost $10,000 and you're disappointed you had to pay $95 for a shave? Furthermore...if you played $10k, you would have accumulated alot of points. Points which, on the last day of the cruise, when you go to casino guest services, they transfer into OBC against your stateroom bill....and I'm sure that would have been enough to cover the $95.

What you lose is only one factor into how many points you earn. I usually earn between 10-15 thousand points per cruise. I play tables with an average bet of around $375 and play around 22 hours per cruise. My last cruise I started off really bad and lost my bankroll early. I lost 13k with a $400 average bet but only played tables about 4 hours. I earned 1200 points total. Even though I only earned 1200 points I still had a few hundred comped off my final bill. Your end of cruise comp also is not just figured on your points. I also received a suite comp for my next cruise. So going into my September cruise I will only 1200 points for the year and have the lowest tier player card but I will be in a suite while someone with 15 points earned over 3 or 4 cruises will be in a balcony at best. Points are nice but really do not amount to much especially if you chase them.

MrMike45, sure I could afford the shave or whatever spa deal I wanted. What I expected was something called "comps". This is something the casino hosts give you to show their appreciation and love. I'm sure, MrMike45, if you keep playing in the casino some time in the future you will learn what a "comp" is. If not please message me back and I'll try to explain further what a "comp" is.

Actually LRN, both I and my wife spend plenty of time in the casinos (both on cruises and land based) and are well aware of what comps are. So no need to explain that to me, but thank you for the offer. What I'm not though is a bragger, a complainer or a whiner thinking people should be fired over something like this, or cheap.

We have been on 15 or so cruises, first being in 2011. Everyone one of them, except for the first obviously, we have been either fully or partially comped for an Oceanview, Balcony or Mini-Suite room. Assuming (maybe incorrectly?), this was not your first cruise, I am quite sure you were comped for your room as well. Paying a fraction of what it would have cost if you called NCL directly to book as a non-casino member. Thousands of dollars in comps.

Additionally, the casino used to give you 2 free dinners, now it is $100-250 in OBC per person. Hundreds of dollars in comps.

Even more additionally, you get a drink card where you can drink for free in the casino. Obviously, the drink package being a perk has diminished this comp somewhat, but you can also get free bottles of water, something that the drink package doesn't even cover. A few hundred dollars more in comps.

Finally, we get treats sent to our room regularly from the casino during our cruises. Choc covered strawberries, plate of chocolates, bottles of wine/champagne, etc. Small but again, more comps.

So adding all that in, the casino has taken care of you a great deal. And all of those perks are irrelevant if you win or lose $10k or more.

They also give points for your play, which you can redeem as OBC against your stateroom account. Yes, as skeeter pointed out, these aren't the greatest things in the world...but with $10k loss, you probably accumulated a solid amount of points, definitely enough for your shave.

So all these thousands of dollars in comps you have already received...because the staff on the ship didn't give you even more...despite your very boastful $10k loss, they should all be fired and barred from ever working in casino services again. And taking to your complaints to cruise critics forum to whine about even more after the cruise was certainly the best way to handle it.

I don't know how people work in customer service and deal with people like you on a daily basis. They are certainly more patient than I could ever be.

MrMike45,

let me give you a few examples of what a "comp" may be. 1st class tickets for 2 to the cruise port, full suite on board. Front row center tickets to any concert you want, either in the casino or in town. Garth Brooks, Carrie Underwood, etc with either a meet & greet or backstage, your preference. 1st class for 2 to Chicago with hotel suite, front row center for Barbara Streisand because my host was smart enough to ask my partner what other artists did I like, had her boss on his personal trip to Hawaii to pick up a couple of Hawaiian shirts for me, bought me a solid gold bracelet that she thought I might like ($3k). Does this kinda give you an idea of what a "comp" could be?

Let me know the next time Garth Brooks or Carrie Underwood are on the Pearl and I'll be sure to book that cruise.

The comps you are referring to are all Vegas hotel comps. And all common...in Vegas. None of that is happening on a cruise ship, sorry to burst your bubble.

Stick with Vegas if you want that stuff.

***edit*** Depending on your level of play, you do get a black car to/from the cruise port. Neither you nor I are that level. And getting a haven/suite room comped is again something they do offer, but the room comps are based on consistent play/cruising. Not 1 cruise with a big loss.

Although it is true that land based casino give much better comps I am surprised that they didn't cover that "shave" for you. I would be disappointed as well.

Did they not take anything extra off your final bill? We usually get most spa, dinner & purchases in the gift shop comped at the end of the cruise. Usually between 400-600 dollars. This is when our losses are around $5000. Very little comped when we come out ahead.

Having said that we do play for long periods of time, and it sounds like you did too as you made enough points to get to the next level. Just doesn't make sense. I'm sorry this turned out this way for you.

My only suggestion is to phone CAS and see what type of cabin you can get comped for your next cruise. Maybe you have a Haven cabin waiting for you.....

All our cruises are CAS cruises and we have never been disappointed with the service or treatment by the Casino staff (on any ship, including multiple cruises on the Pearl), and have always been quite happy with the comps provided during the cruise and after. On every cruise, our on-board account is zero'd out based on points earned, with the exception of things that they are not allowed to write off.

It is true that that with the advent of the UBP and SDP packages, the ability of the casino staff to reward their valued players with comps on the ship has been reduced. Before these packages became universal, we regularly received several comp'd specialty dinners during a cruise. DW received (and still does receive) comp'd spa treatments. As mentioned above, we get all the little treats and bottles of wine in our cabin.

I'm sorry to hear the the OP felt he was not treated fairly. That seems unusual to me.

I am late to the party here, but I feel for the OP. It really Does seem to depend on the Staff, and What perks you

get or don't get. I also had a couple cruises where I felt unjustly Stiffed on perks or comps, that I got on other

cruises, with similar play.

Unfortunately, we don't really Know which Casino staff were going to get, on a particular cruise.

They can make a change, or someone you were expecting goes on Vacay, etc

Usually by the end of the cruise I've gotten to know Most of em, and that seems to help.

But a couple times, I felt ripped off for what I spent, and Wanted to come on here and growl about it too...

Absolutely agree, and I feel for the OP also. I have felt the same way at times from certain hosts - perhaps because of the great treatment/comps I have received from other NCL hosts, so I know what is possible. Maybe I'm jaded, but I don't get excited over chocolate-covered strawberries like some folks do - in fact I am on NCL strawberry & chocolates overload and don't care if I ever see another plate again :) One NCL casino host treated me and FOUR of my non-casino playing friends to a pretty pricey "girls spa" day - just offered without me asking. Another on the same ship/cruise (Breakaway) threw me a birthday party (huge cake, streamers, hats, etc.) in LeBistro and picked up the tab for me and three (non-casino) friends. Two of my (again, non-player) friends wanted to see the Cirque show (I've seen it once and that was enough) and the casino host picked it up - and I wasn't even there! These were all "bill direct to the casino" comps that never even hit my bill. (My final bill of $900+ was wiped out as well.) I lost $14K on that sailing, but at least I felt like the casino appreciated my gaming and business. It wasn't even the dollar value of the comps that made me feel appreciated, it was the constant "what can we do for you?" and trying to anticipate what would make me (and my friends) happy that made the difference. Call me an ingrate, but I just don't get that feeling from a strawberry.

PS Not "bragging" that I dropped $14K. It wasn't my proudest moment. LOL

At least you lost in style. I also recently felt that on the star, I had 3 comped massages and felt that the host and crew took care of me. I can't get that in Vegas anymore.

I have a question, so you have to call CAS to see if you qualify for a future cruise after ending a cruise? I am wondering because we usually sail Carnival and they send the offers directly to our email or it's on our profile online. I thought we might get something from NCL whether a discounted future cruise or OBC on future cruise (at least my husband) because of his play. I am just trying to figure this out because on our offers on NCL when we log in we show no offers. sorry if this has been brought up before, but we are new to NCL, thanks:)

Yes, I call them directly. I would wait until a few days after your cruise ended in order for your play to show up in their records. While I have received mailers from CAS regarding specialty cruises with slot tournaments or beach parties, I prefer to pick my ship and date. The CAS agents I have dealt with have (mostly ;)) been very easy to talk to. Just have a ship and date in mind when you call and they will tell you what they can do for you. Then you can choose to book or wait.

Thank you so much for your quick response. I will give them a call. We are on the Epic next month (just got off the GEM a few weeks ago) but hoping to book something in the Spring. Have a great day.:D

I read this online and figured I would share:
NCL Casino Points

Slots: 1 point per every $5 coin in

Video Poker: 1 point per ever $10 coin in

Table Games: Points are based on game type, average bet, session play, and hands played.

Tier levels are based off of points earned within a 12 month period. The evaluation period is between April 1st- March 31st. Tier levels can be adjusted/upgraded throughout the year based on point earnings.

I got this information from: https://urcomped.com/blog/details/1057379/casinos-at-sea-norwegian-cruise-lines-ncl-casino-rewards/
