Good Company Tours https://www.goodcompanytours.co.nz/cruise-ship-shore offers excellent options to take the Taieri Gorge Train. If your ship arrives at 8:30 AM or earlier, they'll pick you up at the pier and take you to the train station for the round trip train ride. $140.00 NZD pp. This includes the train fare. If your ship arrives 9:00 or later, they will drive you to Pukerangi where you can take a one way train ride back to Dunedin. Since you see the same scenery on the round trip, 2 times (once going and once returning) vs. one time on the one way trip, it's a good option, and about half the cost of the ship excursion.

They have other interesting options for shore excursions in Dunedin too. They offer a tour to see all the major tourist attractions in the city of Dunedin and the surrounding area.

We were very pleased to have found this company.

Agree

Good Company Tours are the best. We have done 4 different shore tours with them and they were so much cheaper than booking we the ship as well as being very reliable. When we did the train trip with them a few years ago it cost us a third of what it was going to cost booking through the ship. Because our cruise ship charged any child over 11 as an adult. But because we booked through Good Company and Adele told us the train wouldn't charge us for our 12 yr old daughter because the1st child is free when traveling with an adult on the train. We saved $250 on her ticket alone.:D

For only a few dollars more than booking the ships shuttle you can book Good Company shuttle return trip into Dunedin as well get a city/ sights tour .

Cheers

You may find this train trip is not available when ships are in port, except from the ship, which is very expensive compared to what it costs normally.

You are so correct! Unfortunately next April 3, when we are scheduled to be in Dunedin, the Taieri Gorge train is unavailable unless you book through the ship at nearly 3 times the rate if it were available directly through Dunedin Railways.

We have decided to take the Waitati Seasider trip offered by Dunedin Railways instead. It's only a 90 minute return, but looks like it would be a really nice trip and is very reasonably priced.

Have friends doing that trip to because the ships booked out the train. They booked it through Good Company they are also going to Olveston House in the morning and the train trip in the afternoon.

We have booked the T.Gorge train with Back to Nature tours in Dunedin for next March whilst in port. They have given excellent service throughout the booking. Pick us up from the ship and also a bus ride to the Penisular afterwards. Much cheaper than the ship's tour. Surprised to hear the train wasn't available in April because of cruise ship being in port. It is definitely available when the Diamond is in port in March.

I hear that it’s not unusual for the ships to book the entire train giving you no option other than to book with them if you are set on the Taieri Gorge train. Unfortunately, April 3, 2018 is one of those times.

If their is more than one ship in port on the day you are there you have less chance of booking the train privately . On the 3rd April you have the Sun Princess and Noordam in that day.We have the same problem when we are there in December .

But there are lots of amazing things to do in and around Dunedin if your unable to book the Taieri Gorge Train privately and you don't want to pay 3 times the price to book through the ships. We have been to Dunedin many times and never had problems finding something new and exciting to see.
