wondering if NCL casino are smoke free venues

many thanks

On the Breakaway they had an area that was supposed to be smoke free and my husband sat down to play cards (because he cannot tolerate smoke anymore), and he had to leave because someone lit up. No smoking areas are not enforced on this ship.

They are (in my experience) if you mention it to staff.

No one should ever have to mention this to the staff. It should be automatic that the staff stop it before someone even lights up. I just cannot tolerate smoke anymore(not even sure why). I am lucky though that after day 1 when I sit at a table in the smoking area the no smoking sign goes up for me automatically.

Certainly is enforced. Witnessed it many times. Because the smoking areas a few. Only the casino and only outside deck on one side.

It will never happen on the European and Asian runs.

During my last cruise (Carnival) the casino was just about the only indoor smoking area. So you can imagine what it was like at night with just about every smoker on the ship crammed into the smoking side of the bar, let alone those players at the smoking tables/slots. There was no escaping it.

By Monday my sinus and lungs were so irritated and my ears had swollen shut. By Wednesday I had to go to see the ship's doctor who diagnosed bronchitis. By Saturday I was still sick enough I couldn't fly and went to another doctor to get a note. Had to delay my flight by four days and still suffered excruciating ear pain on take off and landing.

I like to play in the casino, it's one of the only activities I do while on a cruise ship. Has anyone ever successfully used a filter mask or nose filters for smoke in a ship's casino?

Not on Asian runs I agree

But Europe...I'm not so sure...

We are talking about ncl cruises not costa or p&o etc

I'll go out on a limb here lol and say that while all nationalities cruise all lines....ncl probably has more Americans booking them than Europeans

Before any comments start...I've cruised the Med many many times and yes of course lots of different nationalities but it's very easy to realize that the vast majority on any ncl ship in the Med are Americans

Same with my princess and carnival Med cruises...not so much on my costa Med cruises though.

If I were you I'd cruise celebrity exclusively. Their casinos are smokefree which leads me to believe that they attract more of a non smoking cruise crowd

I'll keep that in mind for future cruises but currently booked on the Escape.

I am a ex-smoker and don't like the smoke in doors either, but i am curious as to why you would ever sit at a table in a smoking section if you "just cannot tolerate smoke anymore". Also, why would they put up a no smoking sign for you? Would you accept a "smoking ok" sign going up in the non smoking section when a particular player sits. If this is being done for you for whatever reason, high roller, Platinum plus cruiser...etc. you are just as much to blame for nothing being said to the smoker lighting up at a non smoking table for similar reason.

The smokers are being limited to certain areas as it is. Less and less everyday. When non smokers go into those areas you need to just accept it.

On the subject of smoking in the casino...if the casino is closed, can you still smoke in there? When we cruised a few years ago on Breakaway, it was disembarkation day and the lines to get off the ship were snaking all over. We we waiting in the Casino and a woman lights up right next to our daughter who may have been 6 at the time. We were flabbergasted. My daughter was coughing and coughing, even after we had moved her. They lady looked annoyed that she was coughing. I don't even think there were ashtrays out anymore. Needless to say my husband had a few choice words for her.:o

The reason that I play in the smoking area is because that is where the high limit tables(blackjack) are. I will deal with the smoke if I really have to. I try to pick a table with nobody playing or no one smoking. When I sit down and ask for a no smoking sign the dealers are always on my side as they would prefer no smoke either. As far as when I approach a table and the sign goes up automatically, I guess that has to do with how I play and how I tip. I will often have 4 figure bets out for many hands in a row. I have also tipped the dealers 4 figures in one session, enough said.

Smoking in a non smoking section and a smoke free table in a smoking section are two entirely different things. C'mon now, smoke is intrusive in a non smoking area. Whereas no direct smoke in a small area of a smoking section is not, period.

Lastly, even if I sit down at a table with smokers more times than not I am asked by them if I mind if they smoke. In that case I just ask if they could put it on the other side of them.

While that does make a lot of sense and I was guessing you are a high dollar player. I would think that if they are so willing to put up sign for you they would also be accommodating to open a high stakes table in the non smoking section for you.

Yep, smoke drifts. When I was standing in the hall by the stairs/elevator trying to decide which way to go, I'd take a step or two then know which way when I smelled the smoke.

When the casino is closed the cruise line says people are not supposed to smoke there. I don't go there when closed so don't know if they do or not.

I thought the cruise line said they don't want people smoking in the casino unless they are playing. So maybe a way they are trying to cut down on the amount of smoking inside the ship???

I still wish the cruise line(s) that allow smoking in the casinos would put up partitions, install better ventilation, and adhere to smoking on one side and no-smoking on the other, and have the same machines and dollar amount tables on both sides of the partition so all players could do so in comfort, while keeping the other areas of the ship smoke-free.

Oh yeah, and have ashtrays by all slot machines on the smoking side of the partition so players can dispose of their ashes and extinguish their cigarette in an ashtray instead of on the table the slot machines sit on!!! I couldn't believe someone did that . So unsafe, I don't want to even think where else they may have done that on the ship .

This drives me crazy. I've never understood why smokers have to flick ashes on the carpet/floor, stamp out their cigarettes on the floor, counter, etc. It is such disgusting behavior.

There are a couple of problems playing high stakes in the low stakes area.

1) There are shuffling machines there which gives the house a better edge.

2) The chips are not set up for a high stakes game. Chips need to be brought to the table for a player who may only be there a short while. Now those chips should be removed which is much harder to do than bringing chips in.

When I used to inquire about setting up a higher game in a lower area I was asked if I could play in the high stakes area and they would put a non smoking sign up for me. I am sure that if I insisted(which I would not) that I wanted the table set up in the low stakes area that they would.
