Anyone been to Hoi An since the flooding in early November?

We are scheduled to visit Hoi An in mid-January and I was wondering how the Ancient Town is doing after the horrible flooding from Typhoon Damrey?

The videos on YouTube were heart breaking. I hope most of the people have recovered and things are back to business so they can make a living from the tourists.

Thanks

Betty

We were there the 25th of November, and the whole place was flooded again.....

We were there on 19th December and there was no sign of the flooding.

A group of us are planning a day trip there.

Looking for a nice "people watching" bar / restaurant where we can meet up again after wandering around.

Any suggestions ?

PS: Anyone go to Marble Mountain on the way there, and have any tips if we did stop there ?

We didn't go via Marble Mountain, nor via any marble shops en route, although it was offered both ways.

Can't help with bars or restaurants, but suggest you all locate place, before you return later, as it is an easy place to get lost.

BTW The waterfront place marked for WC on tourist map (not far from Japanese Bridge) was locked, when we were there. We used the western toilet at the back of a high quality tourist shop/bar, on the waterfront nearby.

Recommend walking along the waterfront, past all the tourist boats, and checking out the wet market there, also the side streets at the far end, near the market. (You can get your nails done there, as well as get your hair cut, etc.)

Tip - When negotiating taxi walk away from any central taxi place (where the people are on commission) and negotiate with uber/taxi drivers direct. I write what a want on a piece of paper, which helps with people not fluent in English. Negotiate a time for the trip and return price for group and pay when you are driven back to the ship or shuttle.

Marble Mountain was on our private tour to Hoi An. First we stopped at a marble carvings shop, mainly for the rest rooms. Carvings were expensive and some huge, but interesting to see. At the mountain most of us took the elevator half way up then went on the paved paths. There are shrines inside caves, with some steep steps. Some of us followed the guide up a really steep scramble over rocks to the very top from where there was a great view. However if you just rode the elevator you would have some view and could make it to the first shrine/cave. At the bottom by the bus parking there were lots of stalls selling the same things at cheap prices, like folding paper fans for $1. I bought a marble carving of fishermen for about $2.

We have a van booked for both ways, as we are docked in Chan May so further than Da Nang.

An update.

Luckily for us we had a port change to Tien Sa in Da Nang as opposed to Chan May.

A lot closer to Hoi An, but a long day for those going to Hue.

We used Tommy Dao Tours for our group of 8.

Very highly recommended.

Tommy met us personally in Da Nang and farewelled us in Hoi An.

His guide and driver were great.

We did Marble Mountain, then a 3 hour guided tour of Hoi An, then 3 hours on our own.

As the ship was overnighting we didn’t leave Hoi An till an hour after dark.

This was a highlight so as to see all the street and river lanterns.
