Room upgrades

how do we find out about upgrading from a cabin to room with balcony?

Whomever you booked with can answer that question easily.

Contact your TA or cruise line. They will tell you the cost, which is usually the difference between what you are paying now and the current cost of the upgraded cabin

If you booked through a TA have them inquire for you.

If you booked directly contact the cruise line.

Also hard to give any additional advice since you didn't post which cruise line.

Have to ask, did you mean picking another cabin and paying the increase in price, OR getting a visit from the "upgrade fairy" and be upgraded free of charge to better cabin?

There is a difference between upgrades (which are free) and upsells (you pay the difference to get a better cabin).

We need more information in order to hep you.

The short answer as already provided is to check with whomever you booked for an up-sell. For a freebee, good luck! They are very far and few between and typically if it happens you are notified by whomever you booked with originally. Otherwise the remaining option is to check with guest services after you board to see if anything is available.
