Difficulty of seeing some Athens places

Hopefully someone can give a brief description of how difficult the walking is to see places like The Acropolis and Parthenon. Is the climbing up steep and strenuous? I don't know how to otherwise ask since everybody has a different opinion of what difficult is, but any help is greatly appreciated.

THANKS

Danny

Yes, it is quite steep. We are in very good shape and in our 50s, but it is definitely steep. Lots of stairs.

The Parthenon actually is the temple that stands on top of the Acropolis, which is a high rocky outcrop in the center of historic Athens.

There are a couple of approaches to the Acropolis. Folks who take a bus tour (e.g., ship tour) and folks who get a taxi are often dropped off near the ticket office and miss a bit of the walk. Those starting at the bottom, at street-level have several paths to choose from, one is steeper than the other but all of them require fairly good balance and the ability to walk up a path without having a railing.

Once you pass through the ticket gate, you will need to climb a number of steps of varying heights that are marble, very old, and VERY slippery underfoot due to the years of wear on their surface making them quite smooth. I'd say there are maybe 75-85 steps in all. There are handrails in some spots (but not all) and there are also a few places where one could stop and rest a bit (out of the flow of the traffic).

At times, the many tourists going up and down can add another danger as one has to maintain awareness of surroundings.

Once you reach the top, the walking is fairly flat and you will be able to see the Parthenon and the other buildings on this level pretty easily.
