Radbooks Posted September 26, 2017 #1 Share Posted September 26, 2017 How much should you tip the porters at the pier in SF? When we sailed out of there a few years ago, one of the guys that took our bag was upset at the amount of tip we gave so we gave him more because we wanted to make sure our bags made it on the ship! I can't remember now what we gave him, but how much is enough for the porters? Thanks!
Rare Keith1010 Posted September 26, 2017 #2 Share Posted September 26, 2017 I would recommend one to two dollars per bag and round up. We would go with the higher end. Say two bags I would give $5.00 because I would round it up to the $5.00 If the bags are extra heavy I take that into account. When we leave the terminal often I give more if they have greater distances to escort us and if they are waiting with us for a vehicle and helping the driver load the luggage. wheezedr Posted September 27, 2017 #3 Share Posted September 27, 2017 I’m generally in the $5 to $10 range depending on number of bags.

MarkSeattle Posted September 28, 2017 #5 Share Posted September 28, 2017 I tipped a dollar a bag 30 years ago. No idea why people still think that is acceptable. SF and NYC are the two most expensive places in the US. At least $3 a bag. So $10 for 2-3 bags is ok. $5 for two bags is pushing it here in SF but I’d be ok with that in some ports. Jeff in Torrance Posted October 3, 2017 #6 Share Posted October 3, 2017 In Los Angeles (and, probably San Francisco) the "porters" are union longshoremen, who are paid fairly well. Tiips are just icing on their cake. We've learned to just carry/drag our bags on board outselves, so do not tip them. Plus, we always have our bags as soon as we get to our cabin. We seem to get by just fine on one airline carryon bag each, plus a smaller day pack or small bag/purse. Makes for easy boarding and disembarking. Nancyquilts Posted October 8, 2017 #7 Share Posted October 8, 2017 $5, a smile and a thank you works for us and our two bags, both leaving and returning.
damiross Posted December 31, 2017 #8 Share Posted December 31, 2017 Screw what the porter thought. A tip is NOT a right - it is a privilege. If the porter did extra good service then tip more. Lousy service, tip less or nothing. They are port employees. They are will paid.
