Unique or bizarre people you have met on your cruises

We sat with two brothers from England who were in their 80s. They had some fascinating stories about being a kid during World War Two. And one of them went ballroom dancing every night.

On our last cruise there were 2 middle aged men dressed as female nursery rhyme characters .

They both had full beards and disembarked from the ship in their attire.

Totally agree!

I am as guilty as anyone in this regard, so this is merely an observation.

Who, when typing their 'entry' for this thread stopped to wonder if, when they were last on a cruise, there was not another couple looking at you and remarking amongst themselves, 'Have a look at those two - have you seen what they're doing?' ...

My late grandmother had some wonderful expressions, not all of them entirely logical (but they made a kind of a sense ...). If she saw two eccentric/idiosyncratic individuals, she would say (and not always sotto voce ...), 'Well, look at those two! Still, it saves spoiling another couple ...' :-))

Ok, I remembered another one. There was a man who looked & dressed exactly like Santa.

I remember a man, who on a 21 day cruise wore the same out fit everyday. It was a beige cotton jumpsuit. No, he wasn't crew. I always wondered if it was the same one each day, or if he brought others to change into.

On one of our cruises, one of the entertainers was a hypnotist and one of the people on stage was a young man 18 - 20 years old who was traveling with his parents. He was a completely normal looking person, whom you would never pick out of a crowd except for the fact that when he was hypnotized, he did something so embarrassing, that everyone kept seeing him and saying hi to him. We saw him everywhere.

Another time, there were two men from Germany, and on elegant night, they dressed in 40's "Zoot Suits" . They were a lot of fun.

Lastly, there was a gentleman who wore a bright green speedo and danced all over the Lido deck.

Just about guarantee someone talks about me.

As we were sailing into Honolulu we had breakfast with a couple we hadn't previously met on board. The guy was asleep in his barrack in Pearl Harbor when the Japanese begin bombing. He recalled looking out the window and seeing a Japanese plane fly right by the window. Very interesting stories.

My favorite was the guy who came to formal night(this was quite a few years ago when formal nights were substantially more "formal" than they are now) wearing very tight leather pants, cowboy boots, a large all leather Stetson hat and ...wait for it...a leather vest with no shirt and pierced nipples with a gold chain running between the piercings. Oh, and yes, they let him in to the MTD! :D

Two come to mind:

The lady who approached our table on the first night and said, "You would think they would seat us suite passengers with better people."

The lady who sat on the steps with art supplies nearly blocking the staircase and yelled at people who were talking and disturbing her creativity.

We have met great people on all our cruises with the exception of this last one a few weeks ago.

 

Alaska R/T out of Seattle on the HAL Eurodam. First time for both - Alaska and HAL. Sailing into Glacier Bay when my wife and I went to breakfast in the MDR - asked for a window seat and shared a table with a woman from Canada. Said "Good Morning" and it was downhill from there.

 

It was her first time to Alaska and on HAL as well, but rather than admire the scenery of entering Glacier Bay, she proceeded to tell us how horrible HAL was and it is nothing compared to RCCL. The staff were rude, the food horrible, the ship was disgusting and everyone lies to you. Waiter comes by and asks for our drink order - having a drink package, she wanted a specific type of bottled water and didn't want the one in the plastic bottle. When he left to find someone about it, she told us that they "don't want to give out the good stuff". The Maitre 'd comes out and wasn't sure what she wanted and she told her the "good stuff in the glass bottle" that she got at some bar on the ship - and none of that "fizzy stuff". She leaves to find it and she tells us that she is going to get the most she can out of the drink package to make up for being on Holland America. One of the sommeliers eventually come by with what she was looking for.

 

By that time we were nearly finished with breakfast and just wanted to get out of there. He opens the bottle of water, pours her a glass and leaves. She asks if we would like some and we politely decline. She takes a couple of sips and gets up to leave, leaving that full glass AND bottle on the table. She says her goodbyes and says she is going back to her cabin to go back to sleep

 

Wife and I just look at each other and shrug as we get ready for the day in Glacier Bay, wondering how someone can go thru life being so unhappy........

Good grief...we may have been seated with this lady in the MDR on MSC Divina. She was so rude to the poor waitstaff, gave the server a real dressing-down because her poached eggs had come aside the toast, not ON TOP as she requested. :rolleyes: She practically screamed at the poor guy, "YOU DON'T LISTEN!" and stormed off. We (quietly) use that as sort of a code joke line when we notice someone being an ass to servers. ;)

We were seated next to a couple about our age in the MDR on NCS Star (we each had a two-top, not a group table). They struck up a conversation with us and although we're generally happy to keep to ourselves, we kept up the discussion through the meal, covering topics such as where we live, raising kids, occupations, the usual stuff. They were very interesting, pleasant people, and I thought the evening was very enjoyable. We ended the evening with a cheery "See you around the ship!" type of departure and went our separate ways.

The following day, we happened to get into an elevator with them and cheerfully greeted them with a "Well, hello, fancy seeing you again!" or similar, and to our surprise, we were met with a not exactly cold but an uncomprehending stare from both of them, as though they'd never seen us before. Our smiles dimmed a bit but we just shrugged and let it go. They departed the elevator without a word. We ran into them several times thereafter and they acted as if they'd never laid eyes on us. It was so strange, I had to wonder if we had unknowingly said or done something to offend them, or perhaps they had been drinking a lot that evening and completely blacked us out!

I gotta say the idea of cutting down on luggage is tempting... In all seriousness, I've sometimes wondered if anyone would notice if I repeated an outfit or two over the course of a cruise. I'd almost convinced myself people don't pay that kind of attention to others but this thread now has informed me otherwise. :D

This post has my vote for most "unique/bizarre".

So I am sitting at the pool this summer on the Allure.

And a young couple started talking to us.

And out of the clear blue the lady goes to me, that last night she got a little tooo drunk and her and her boyfriend, got a little busy, and now she is afraid and does not want to become pregnant......:confused:

Do you think the on board medical facilities could help her?

So at first I thought I was set up as a joke and they wanted to see my reaction.

Then my second thought was.......................WHY ME?

I stared dumbfound, had no response.....................

Really???????

I mean I am a mom, but still.

So my DH comes over I tell him.......................he laughs, says she was probably still drunk (2pm).

Never saw them again, glad we did not.

First time for anything bizarre.

Just thought of this one!

We were discussing our plans for various ports with a newlywed couple in their early 20's whom we met onboard a few years ago. We were in our 60's.

Jost Van Dyke...We get our chairs and the wife tells us she hasn't drank, had gone to AA meetings in the past, and was now alcohol free. Almost immediately she goes to the bar and starts downing quite a few painkiller drinks. Gets completedly wasted. The new husband says nothing about this. You could tell he's seen her in action before.

So we now have to walk through the water and climb into the small pontoon boat to take us back to the dock. She was a pretty big girl and my husband and hers had to push and shove her up into the boat! She was like dead weight since she was so drunk. Not easy.

The next excursion was to Dominica where Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed. The water in the cave there was freezing so I decided not to enter. My husband decided to jump off a cliff into the cave. The newlyweds decide to swim into the cave with some type of flat life preserver that they held onto. My husband sees them in the cave and had to help them both out. Thankfully, he had been a lifeguard many years ago so he knew how to do this.

I doubt I'm one of the people you've met, but...

I'm sure people have talked about me as being 'one of those bizarre people' on two of my cruises!!! :o:eek:;p Lol!

On a cruise last year there were older twin brothers, always dressed identically. Also an older man with dyed red hair, who wore a wig and hat to make himself look like Willie Nelson.

On our cruise I met a family that had a child around my daughter's age (2 at the time) so my daughter began to play with their little girl and we all introduced ourselves. Included in this family was a grandpa who was red with sunburn and had really long blond hair. On one occasion he told me how pretty my" black skin color was and how he was going to call me Butter Pecan Brown"(sounds like a porn star name lol) he went on to say "you look like you are from the islands, you have a reddish tone to your skin. Too bad you may not know if you are mixed with anything on behalf of the slaves being raped by their masters." There was dead silence among the group.

On another occasion we ran into him at the pool and he stood up to greet my kids and I; he had on a red metallic Speedo with orange flames on it, and his stomach was hovering above like a huge huge huge basketball it was so strange.

Several; I never talk about my career but a fellow passenger saw my business card laminated on my backpack and discovered I was an oncology district manager for a big pharma company. He was also a table mate for 7 nights.

I got a barrage of questions about hot flashes, HGH, pricing models and a request to send a resume' to me somewhere between melting cake and the Indian vegetarian plate.

This summer we had someone that told my wife and I they've been on 14 cruises and could tell us all we needed to know. Only when she asked for the second day in a row did I tell her we've sailed 36 times. Crickets.

I'm just content to enjoy our new friends regardless of card color or what they do. Tell me about your day in port, at sea or what you did fun.
