Puerto Vallarta: Boca de Tomatlan and Ocean Grill?

Recently we havenot been there. Since we drive our car here, my best guess for a cab would be around Pesos 300,- one way.

Those at the cruise terminal are more expensive, they charge per person. They can only bring you, no pickup on your return.

The yellow cabs outside the terminal (along the highway, near Pemex gasstaion etc.) are a bit cheaper, but always make your rate before entering the cab.

Driving time in total will be around 45 minutes depending traffic. The drive itself is nice. You need to have reservations at Ocean grill, they have their own small boat that will pick you up at the dock in Boca.

Very likely cabs will be waiting at the dock on your return, but you can check that with Ocean grill of course.

From old town (not from the cruise terminal) there also is a city bus. From the cruise terminal you need 2 buses and have a small walk in between, That will take much longer of course.

Thank you for your reply. If the cabs will not return us how do we get back. I assume there are plenty of cabs needing the business.

Thank you,

We were recently (February) there for lunch, although we took a taxi from our winter home in the Old Town of PV. Ine is accurate (as always) that the fare from the port area will be about 300 Pesos (they might ask for 350) if you go out of the port and use the local Yellow (some are now white) taxis. The taxi drops you at Boca from where you walk over to the pier and wait for the boat transfer (unless you want to hike through the jungle). There is a taxi station right in Boca which usually has 2 or 3 taxis. When the boat brings you back to Boca (from the restaurant) just be among the first off the boat (or move quickly once ashore) and walk up to the nearby road to grab one of the waiting taxis. Otherwise, you would have to wait for a taxi to return to the area. If this happens and you do not want to wait, you can walk up to the main road (5 min stroll) and wait for a local bus (I think its 8 or 8.5 Pesos) that will take you back to Old Town. Once there you can either grab a taxi (or use a different bus) to get back out to the Marina (Port). If you do not have any Pesos the drivers will usually accept $1 (do not expect change).

As to the restaurant, keep in mind its cash only (Pesos or US Dollars) and you do need to make an advance reservation. If you want their boat transfer, make sure you indicate this on their online reservation form . The boat driver will have a list of those with reservations. The restaurant is pretty good, and the atmosphere amazing. If you want a interesting experience make sure you use their rest rooms :).

Just an update on the Ocean Grill (which had an amazing reputation) which was a popular restaurant (lunch only) just south of Puerto Vallarta. The latest info is that this restaurant is closed! If it does reopen it will under new ownership.....so there is no way we can make any kind of recommendation. For any cruisers that were considering the long trek out to this picturesque restaurant, you should think of alternative plans.

Just an update regarding the Ocean Grill. According to their web site, they are going to reopen around December 1....which is very good news for those who have enjoyed this wonderful venue. Ernesto (the owner) also mentioned that he is testing some new additions to his already excellent menu. For folks on cruise ships, this restaurant is located a few miles south of Puerto Vallarta and is normally accessed by a shuttle boat (provided by the restaurant) from the pier at Boca de Tomatlan. It has always been a "lunch only" restaurant and you must have an advance reservation. The setting of this restaurant is truly fantastic. But cruisers should also be cautioned that going there for lunch will take up a lot of your day. There is a small sandy beach adjacent to the restaurant, so its possible to go there for lunch and a swim (before or after).

Wow! We had a confirmed reservation for 11/8/17 booked through OpenTable. We ended up not going. I would have been *PISSED* if I had paid a taxi to take me an hour away from the cruise port to find a closed restaurant!!

We were not even aware they were on Opentable as we have always made our reservations on their own web site. But your situation would have been even worse then you realize, because after taking that long taxi ride (probably close to 45 min) you would have been dropped in the tiny village of Boca Tomatlan. You then would have walked down to the pier to await the boat (owned by the restaurant) that comes to transfer all the folks, with reservations, over to the restaurant (about a 10 min boat ride). If nobody in the village gave you a warning you might still be waiting on that dock for your boat transfer.
