Hope people will second suggestion about my ideas for the paid movies on NCL'S TV....

I posted this on their FB page as I hoped others beside readers on here, might also second my suggestion but the post was never posted (unless they review them first). It was somewhat negative towards the cruise line (in a positive way :hearteyes:) but I see that they haven't removed from their FB page people who just insulted them!

My suggestion for NCL (and hope many, MANY, you second this on their FB site, does no good here) is that NCL has a movie pass for the fee based ($5.99-7.99) movies shown on TV, purchase a package like $10 a day for as many movies as one wants for the whole cruise, or if it's a longer cruise, maybe have weekly packages at a little higher price per day or a day pass if they want of $15 for one whole day of unlimited movies but still cheaper than per movie which also should still be available.

Most people I think, don't see live musicals so often and may just prefer movies, plus the fact if you are a frequent cruiser like I WAS with them, you have seen the shows already (even though I prefer NCL price and itineraries for my U.S. to Tokyo cruise, with so many sea days wanted to go on a cruise ship with a good library of both books and movies -HAL has 2000 movies you can see on their FREE On Demand system, and for your jokesters referring to HAL demographics, NO, they are not just ones you would see on Turner Movie Classic channel!) tired of NCL's cheap entertainment of just trivia games with schlocky prizes or worse yet no prizes a'tall or fee based games, like Bingo and Deal or No Deal and everything else interesting usually fee based. NCL usually doesn't have many lecturers but on the few cruises that they DID have them on, they were packed (people taking the transpositioning ones are different from Carib. passengers, people WILL go them and again, that's not a real expensive form of entertainment for NCL.)

On NCL, the free movies are pretty banal and worse, you can't get a schedule of them and just have the luck `to see it from the beginning to end. They could also use it as an another option for their Free At Sea, it might cost them less than the free excursion and for sure the free internet minutes.

Most people who cruise on NCL, let's face it are cheap and will NOT spend $5.99 on up per movie so they lose that revenue but with packages, passenger may be willing to pay for that, (of course, knowing NCL's propensity for nickle and diming they may not have done this already because they can't ) but as I first said, I hope others who read this, will second this. The IDEAL solution of course, would be just to have movies on TV for free, but of course, that's NOT NCL, their philosophy is sell the room cheap so you don't have to give too much to the travel agent and make money on everything else!

If not, can (hope NCL is reading this) at least, give people who come to the front desk, a schedule of when the movies start and stop (so if you want to do a shipboard activity you can see if you will have enough time to see it to the end,) if you are too ah..thrifty..to give every stateroom one?

Didn’t care for the NCL cruisers are cheap crack. I have cheap friends, they dont cruise, rarely travel, thats cheap. Cruising is not cheap on any of the lines.

Not something I would use, I already have Netflix and they let you download movies now, just do that. I’m always behind on my Netflix binge watch list anyway.

I don't agree with this. With a drink package, which lots of people have now, it's possible to spend almost no extra money on the ship, except for the DSC.

My thought exactly. Most of us do not cruise so we can watch movies on the tiny TV screen. And I am not cheap. No, we do not stay in Suites, but those who do are certainly not CHEAP~!!!!! The only thing I do agree with: we should be able to get a list of what movies will be shown and when. On the rare occasion we do want to watch a movie and it does happen we would like to know what time a movie is going to be on.

And OP, the statement about selling the cabin cheap so NCL doesn't have to pay so much to TAs has to be one of the wildest ideas I have ever heard. You do have a very vivid imagination.

We will be staying in a suite on Dawn in March. I thought they got rid of the in-suite DVD players because the movies were available on-demand. So it is not like a hotel room where you can pick on-demand movies?? I am mainly asking for my granddaughter who will be with us and likes the TV on as she goes to sleep.

I doubt you will get much support in your quest to upgrade the already diminishing in-room television programming. Even for a user fee, I doubt the cruise line would invest the resources to provide and maintain the system required (i.e. hardware, software and licensing costs) when the vast majority of passengers aren't interested.

If in-room entertainment is what you are looking for and found it available on HAL, it would seem to be the best option for you is to sail with HAL rather than champion change to a different line that doesn't offer that amenity.

NCL already has movies on demand. No additional infrastructure required. Just options for purchasing the service.

i am always amused by people that complain about the lack of TV channels and options on board. this is now a new one for me.

i, like others, do not cruise to stay in my room watching TV. the only time we do spend more time int he room is when we have a suite or are in the Haven, and then the movies are free. that said, we only watch maybe 1 or 2 the entire week usually when we decide to order dinner in or im taking a nap before dinner and fiance relaxes with a movie.

im not opposed to OP's idea, tho, because it wouldnt cost me anything if this was an opt in package. just nto sure how'd they'd program an individual room TV to get free pay per view.

Honestly, I do agree with OP that NCL's TV offerings are inferior to other cruise lines. Adding insult to injury is the pricing, if you planned on watching movies.

I like the TV on in the room when I have finished up with daytime activities and I am preparing for the evening. Seeing the same snippet of a movie over and over is a little irritating.

However, I have never considered paying for a movie on a cruise. Especially when NCL's movie offerings are similar to streaming services offerings. If they were offering movies that are still in theatres, I might consider sitting in my cabin that long and paying an additional fee for the movie. Otherwise, I like to do things on vacation that I can't do at home.

Not seeing the whole “movie package” thing getting much traction. As others point out, going on a cruise to sit in the cabin to watch movies isn’t something very many would want to do. Besides, they do play movies in the Atrium.

Plus, you can download movies from home to a computer or iPad to watch, if that’s something you really want to do.

As far as TV programming on the ship, again, I can’t say as I care at all. It’s just not important to me on a cruise.

Fact is, I sleep, shower, get dressed, and have coffee and/or cocktails on the balcony....those are the only things I do in my cabin. I even bring my own little Bluetooth speaker to play music from my iPhone when in the cabin for entertainment.

You know, when you ask people to do something, you get better results if you refrain from insulting them.

We do consider ourselves frugal, which means using money in a considered way, but if we were cheap, as you suggest, we wouldn't be on a cruise ship and a trip to Europe in the same year. We just prefer not to squander what we have.

We also do not cruise to sit in a cabin and watch movies we can see on Netflix, Hulu, Britbox and slingtv at home where a sparkling ocean usn't in constant motion right outside our window.

If you are in a suite (suite, not mini-suite, right?), you will get free access to to on-demand library NCL has on ship in additional to their tv channels (mostly ship/news channel, but includes a movie channel which is being discussed in this thread). As far as what is the variety of movies available from the on demand library, I don’t know

While im not opposed to the idea, I would never pay for it. The last thing I want to do on a cruise is watch the TV. I leave my Ipad at home, turn off the cell phone etc. I do not facebook, cruise critic, movie watch etc while im on vacation, I can do all of that at home. I will usually turn the TV on in the morning while I get dressed so I can see what the weather is going to be like at our port stop, then it goes back off when we leave the room.

Again, I am not opposed to NCL offering it as I understand that everyone vacations differently and for some, it might be the only time they have a chance to sit and watch movies just not for me

Thank you for the clarification. I thought the "movie channel" being discussed was the same as the on-demand movies.

Exactly. We intentionally avoid the internet and cell phones on a cruise. We are bringing an iPad because I’ve downloaded quiet classical music for evening before bed and morning coffee. But that's it.

Thank you for the ONE person who didn't take umbrage and understood that I wanted to HELP people with this suggestion not HURT them, it would be a paid option that only people who wanted it would have to pay for, it wouldn't be FORCED on all others who would ALL have to pay for it, with higher fares.

Well it IS interesting to see all the replies, as I said this is on repositioning cruises, with not a lot of port stops, and as they said in Italian, mi dispiace, did not mean to offend by saying NCL passengers are cheap, should use the euphemism, fiscally prudent. I am, I don't have time and am too cheap to go to movies or subscribe to all those streaming service since I ALREADY am forced to pay for cable through my HOA and have hundreds of TV shows to watch when I DO have leisure time so downloading movies is NOT an option and wouldn't want to watch on a small computer screen.

I DID say in my FIRST post, that this was a transpositioning cruise, that is ONE of the reasons of many, despite reaching almost Ambassador status I am no longer cruise on NCL and will be taking HAL for this cruise although it costs more and has less port stops. I am making this suggestion NOT to bash NCL but so they can give prospective passengers more reasons to take them vs other ones. I think with all the new ships being built and more cabins to fill, cruise ships would rather hear about how to attract more passengers, not for them to find reasons for them NOT to cruise on their line. HAL who usually attracts an older demographic, will have a $170 fee for unlimited internet on their 15 day transpositioning cruise. I remember attending a town hall type of meeting on NCL, a transpositioning cruise which had mostly older people in the crowd, a man stood up and said, "if you want to get the younger generation to cruise, have free (or cheap, can't quite remember) internet and people cheered and clapped for 5 minutes.

As for those who criticize me for watching TV (MOVIES not shows) I already mention the dearth of activities I find on NCL ships especially as one who has cruised them many times, so when I have a cruise like that, now I would like to watch movies or read books, (their libraries are usually not very good either) as ordinarily I don't have much time to read or watch movies but I don't understand why so many are so hostile to my watching movies on TV on a cruise, I once had a cabin mate, who spent almost every waking minute, playing the same computer game over and over and over again, never leaving the cabin except to eat (with the sound on late at night, and it was just sound effects with no instructions for the game, not even music) and some people play board and card games so why not want to watch movies, different strokes for different folks!

Last but not least, when someone mocked me about how NCL will have cheap cabins but nickle and dime for everything, it IS true (talked to someone in the industry), the person who laughed knows VERY little (politely I won't say he knows nothing) about business (gave another example below ). Travel agents MUCH prefer booking passengers on those high end voyages which include everything because they can make more money as they make commission on the complete cost of the cruise which is not broken down. On a line like NCL where a passenger doesn't pay for all the fee based perks until they get on the ship, the T.A. make no commissions on them.

It's like with newspapers, I entered a contest my local paper had and not reading the fine print, did not realize that I started a subscription, when I started getting the paper, I contacted them and told them that I didn't want a subscription but I knew that newspaper does not make their money on the subscriptions they charge their customers (even though the charge for a much thinner paper at $1.25 per issue-which is how much the LA Times used to charge for a Sunday paper heavy enough to kill a small dog is much higher than years ago, for a much thicker one, which was .10) but on what they can charge the few companies still advertising in the paper for a guaranteed subscription base (the number of people who would see the ad) and if they wanted to keep me as a subscriber for those reasons and not charge me for it, they could do so. I guess I was ABSOLUTELY right, because they keep delivering the paper without charging me (I not only talked to someone on the phone but sent an email so they understood.)

Well I for one LOVE to watch movies while on a cruise! My DH and I are those people who LIVE with the tv on at home....and do find the few channels that NCL offers a bit less than optimum. We would be HAPPY to pay for movies! Either pay per movie or buy an unlimited pass.....

Guess most of you would consider us the "uncultured" group! But as we work 7 days a week, NEVER take the time to go to a movie at home.....watching new releases OR movies that are "almost" new....is a treat for us. And I do not see why it would hurt anyone if this service was offered. It DID seem to me that there were more options for on demand movies in the Haven on the larger/newer ships? But that could be my imagination.....

So.....we would be on-board with your idea, DO sail in Haven suites exclusively, LOVE to watch movies late at night "early morning?" after coming in from the casino....and think that many of you are protesting too much about the fact that you do NOT go on a cruise to watch tv/movies? As if this makes your trip somewhat more superior/important/cultural? And I agree with some of the posters in that I would not want to watch ANYTHING on a laptop, small screen, etc. The suites have multiple decent sized televisions....and watching a late night movie in bed is right up our alley. Takes all kinds, right?
