Photographing Las Vegas

Arguably the best view of the fountains at Bellagio is from the observation deck of the Eiffel Tower at Paris.

One of the best shots of the lights of the strip is from the pedestrian overpass between New York New York and MGM Grand.

First two thoughts...

Standing on the entry level of the Bellagio at dusk puts the lighted fountains right in front of you and the Paris and some surrounding hotels into your background. It worked well for me. You can also get some nice views of the Strip from the top floor of the Bellagio garage. It is one of the few garages that actually fronts on the Strip.

There are pictures of all kinds every where you go in Vegas so just keep looking around. Take an afternoon and drive out to Red Rock Canyon, lots of cool scenery, especially early or late in the day. For a longer drive, about an hour Valley of Fire state park is truly amazing. Head out to Boulder City and Hoover Dam. While there you can park and walk out on the new bridge across the Colorado River and get some great views of the dam that are almost aerials.

If you really want some thing special, head out to Summerlin and you can get some great pictures of my grandchildren..... :)

Thanks for the ideas but I won't have a car for the drives -sorry Mr. Click! :D

It's supposed to be 100+ this weekend, so I'll probably stay pretty close to the air conditioning. It also depends on how patient my husband is while we're walking around. I will probably spend quite a bit of time around the Bellagio, it's close to our hotel and very photogenic. Thanks for the tips near there.

I'm going to carry around only my 35 prime on Sunday to challenge myself to learn a bit more about it. I'll have other lenses for the evenings and morning while I am out. I'm looking forward to it, there is something unique everywhere on the strip.

If you are going to do the Neon Museum do their twilight tour. While the signs don't light up like they did in their hay day most of them are lit up nicely but I am pretty sure they do not allow tripods and you must stay with your tour group. They are pretty picky about controlling the use of images from their property.

I'll be there a few days and I'm not much of a gambler.

My wife had a convention there a few years ago, and I'm not a gambler either. There is a lot of amazing architecture and landscaping to photograph.

I was there during August, and morning temperatures weren't that bad along the Strip. In addition, you can travel blocks at a time indoors, or mostly indoors. (Mandalay Bay, Luxor, and Excalibur are all connected, for example.)

The outdoor lighting was incredibly harsh, and I was using a camera that lacked any features to adapt to it. However, even with a cheap point-and-shoot I was able to get some nice photos by embracing the high-key nature of the lighting.

Do any of you have favorite, iconic shots? Places you like to go to get the night shot at Bellagio or the lights of the city?

I'll try to describe where I got my favorite shots.

  1. The landscaped area right in front of Mandalay Bay with the waterfalls.
  2. The architecture of The Shops at Crystals.
  3. The Wynn conservatory (indoors).
  4. One of the entrances to the Palazzo near the Wynn, where both walls were hung with crystals, and crystal chandeliers lined the middle of the hall, all back-lit by the indirect light streaming in through the north-facing entrance.
  5. The sculptures at the Richard MacDonald art gallery. (There were some more of his sculptures inside The Shops at Crystals, but the backgrounds were a bit busy.)
  6. Some of the back hallways inside of the Bellagio, which are well lit by skylights and/or windows. The fan-shaped shadow from one of those windows made a wonderful counterpoint to the fan-shaped silhouette of the floral arrangement in the hall.

The interiors of casinos tend to be very dark, so plan accordingly.

I was only there 2 and a half days. Sunday I spent mostly with my husband and watching football. We went to dinner at a restaurant right on the Bellagio waterfront. The view was pretty good, but people were in the way and the food was too good to spend much time taking pictures - even there.

Monday I had the morning free and I went down to the Cosmopolitan and Bellagio area, a new display had just opened in the conservatory

It was lots of fun and I learned a lot about my prime lens, I'll update that later. Thanks for your tips,

Vic
