Which Hurtigruten ship is "better": Trollfjord vs Kong Harald?

My girlfriend and I are planning a Northern Lights holiday and are starting to do research/book as my leave was just approved.

We have looked at the Hurtigruten website and have some questions of anyone who has been on both Trollfjord and Kong Harald! Any of your information or opinions would be appreciated.

Ship-wise we are probably looking Kong Harald or Trollfjord. Kong Harald is more expensive and we like the look of the deck map of Trollfjord where the Jacuzzi is on the top deck near the bar. Which ship is "better"? Pros and Cons? Any downsides to Trollfjord?

We can't decide Northbound or Southbound. We note that Kong is more expensive than Trollfjord in the top premium cabin but the same price in the leading inside cabin. Northbound is more expensive that Southbound in all cabins.

Price-wise and deck plan-wise Trollfjord looks better than Kong Harald. What insight can anyone provide for these two ships please and direction of travel in Winter.

Thanks in advance!

I have only being sailing Kong Harald - I'm planning a Trollfjord sailing, so also interested in information from other cruisers.

Trollfjord is a new ship (2002) and a big bigger (822 passengers) however Kong Harald (590 passengers) is renovated in 2016.

I like the Artic Superior cabin on Kong Hans better that the layout on Trollfjord.

North- or south bound might depend on time of the year and what you'll like to experience - check the time table at this link

Thanks for the link hallasm.

It actually gave us a good idea, and we then compared many cruise ship video reviews for Hurtigruten on Utube.

Interestingly I found out: Kong Harald has sister ships of Nordlys and Richard With. And Trollfjord has a sister ship Midnatsol.

So really I should have posted: Trollfjord/Midnastol vs KongHarald/Nordlys/RichardWith!!

If this thread doesn't get a reply I might re-post it with the new tags/title so people realise they might have been on the ships we are interested in! :)

You are welcome.

Yes, sister ships, however cabins might still be very different and I believe of those, Kong Harald is the only ship been refurbished in 2016.

Also Nordkapp, Nordnorge, and Polarlys were refurbished in 2016.

Do not expect many replies - Hurtigruten Thread has limited readers.

I’m not sure when Trollfjord was last refurbished, but she was in extremely good condition in February of this year. Most of the carpets appeared new, and the furniture was in great shape too. I think the ships are really well-maintained, so date of refurbishment isn’t so critical.

I'm planning a northern lights cruise. This was very helpful (especially the video). Thanks!

You’re welcome. I’m planning a cruise with Trollfjord in January 2019 from Bergen to Kirkenes- questions are welcome - the planning is very important and Hurtigruten is not a ‘mainstream’ cruise line.

Ship size and value to the passenger, not in $$$$ but in intangible experience is directly related. A ship like Trollfjord is 900 passengers Kong Herald is only 540....

Meaning that your more than likely to have a much better experience, more space, better viewing when there are less rats in the cage..... Less in more to a point.

The attraction in not being a "mainstream " cruise line is a plus, If your interested in nature and adventure you would find it a waste to have a floating casino, Theater, formal dinners and dress up like a resort las vegas hotel... who needs that in Norway?????.

I think you might be giving the wrong impression of Trollfjord. There are 638 berths on Trollfjord, and if she has the full complement of day passengers, the number of people on board can climb to 822. Kong Herald has 498 berths, and can hold a maximum of 590 passengers if you include day passengers. So as far as people sleeping in cabins on the ship, and eating in the dining hall, there is a grand total of 140 more possible on Trollfjord.

I’m not sure anyone here was longing for a casino or formal nights, and Hurtigruten certainly aren’t offering that on Trollfjord. She is still a lovely ship, very much in the Hurtigruten style. Because she is slightly larger than Kong Herald, to go with the slightly larger number of passengers, the amount of cage per rat should not be noticeably smaller.

But you still have 140+ more The ship is not that much bigger in my estimation...to absorb the extra rats

Having travelled on both ships I can confirm:

there is a lot more public/viewing/deck space on Trollfjord (more than compensating for number of additional passengers.

I would choose Trollfjord any day (I also like Lofoten the smallest/oldest in fleet so I'm not a "cruise ship" afficienado - Trollfjord is still very Norwegian and characterful despite larger size)

the actual comparison in tonnage/size is TF 16140Gton/2918sqM & KH 11,200GTon/2337sqm

in my experience Trollfjord is quieter, more stable & rolls less

Hope this is helpful.
