mattR Posted October 14, 2009 #1 Share Posted October 14, 2009 We were on the Veendam last week and on surf and turf night the waiter did not remove the lobster meat fron the shell. This is the first time on a cruise when they did not do this for me, is this common or just a miss on the part of our waiter that night. We were on Open Seating. Homosassa Posted October 14, 2009 #2 Share Posted October 14, 2009 I have never had a waiter remove the shell from a a lobster tail for me as I am more than capable of doing it myself (it would be like having him cut my meat up). However, service does suffer in the open seatings. The waiter was probably too busy running around to take the shell off a lobster tail.
jhannah Posted October 14, 2009 #3 Share Posted October 14, 2009 I'm guessing this was a fluke. The shells have been removed by the steward every time we've had lobster.
Taxguy77 Posted October 14, 2009 #4 Share Posted October 14, 2009 My first several cruises, the Maitre'D (sp) came around and did it. It was the only time during the cruise he even looked at us, so I gave his tip to people who actually made the cruise better for us.
canadianbear Posted October 14, 2009 #5 Share Posted October 14, 2009 We had the open seating and the waiter, even though he was very busy, removed the lobster meat from the shell (unless told not to by a guest.) I loved being pampered and since I am a bit of a klutz if I had of done it myself it probably would have ended up at a different table! We also did not find our service suffered in the open seating at all.
leoandhugh Posted October 14, 2009 #6 Share Posted October 14, 2009 All you had to do was ask him/her to remove the shell and they are more than willing to oblige, no matter how busy they may be.:)
themerle Posted October 14, 2009 #7 Share Posted October 14, 2009 I have always had my lobster removed from the shell by my server. Some times it might take a few minutes for him to come back and do it.
tytan Posted October 14, 2009 #8 Share Posted October 14, 2009 We had open seating on the Zaandam last week and as soon as the surf and turf was served we were asked if they could remove the meat from the shell for us. I was impressed.
DutchByAssociation Posted October 14, 2009 #9 Share Posted October 14, 2009 We had open seating on the Zaandam last week and as soon as the surf and turf was served we were asked if they could remove the meat from the shell for us. I was impressed. My experience was the same, (on the same ship) but I had beat him to the punch. I typically only like lobster if it's still SUPER hot, and lobster can cool rather quickly. If I don't inhale it upon arrival it'll likely remain on the plate when it's taken :)
Krazy Kruizers Posted October 14, 2009 #10 Share Posted October 14, 2009 It has been a long time since our waiter removed the shell from the lobster tail. The waiters have soooo many more meals to deliver than what they used to have. I don't want them having to let someone elses meal get cold while they run around taking care of that simple task for me. I like my lobster hot -- and brought right our from the kitchen -- served immediately so that it still doesn't keep steaming under that metal lid and getting tough. catl331 Posted October 14, 2009 #11 Share Posted October 14, 2009 I agree, Krazy. My Yankee blood can't wait to eat that tail and it is the easiest part of the lobster to remove from the shell. Hot is best! Although I sure wouldn't refuse cold lobster salad. I always liked to order the Dover sole just to see the waiter remove the bones. Now that is something best left for them to do. trophy_23 Posted October 14, 2009 #12 Share Posted October 14, 2009 I beat him to it last week on our surf and turf night, but he was there to remove my Girlfriend's for her.
Bill HaHa Posted October 14, 2009 #13 Share Posted October 14, 2009 Last week on the Veendam, the shell was off when it was served and still hot.
jcrandle Posted October 15, 2009 #14 Share Posted October 15, 2009 I don't remove the shell any longer since seeing Darryl Hannah in Splash. Just enjoy that crunchy goodness!:D
ore-ee-gun Posted October 15, 2009 #15 Share Posted October 15, 2009 I may be remembering incorrectly, but in my somewhat limited experience, the servers have always loosened the meat from the shell before presenting the plate.
sylteach Posted October 15, 2009 #16 Share Posted October 15, 2009 We ordered Surf and Turf from room service and the it was still on the shell. One cut and it came right off-no big deal.
Juanita462 Posted October 15, 2009 #17 Share Posted October 15, 2009 We were on the Veendam last week too and, in our area, the lobster was not removed from the tail. Some waited and then removed the meat themselves - we were in fixed dining. They do remove the bone from the Dover sole still, but would really rather remove it myself as there is always a few bones left when done in a hurry. azcaptainbob Posted October 15, 2009 #18 Share Posted October 15, 2009 Also on the Veendam last week and our waiter did not remove the tails from the shells...open dining and he was our waiter for the entire week..thought he was great.
DogLover Posted October 16, 2009 #19 Share Posted October 16, 2009 On the Veendam 5 day from Vancouver to San Diego fixed early seating ... no assistance to remove meat from the shell for our tablemates. We thought it was simply because our server was subpar ... perhaps not. Our service in the dining room was okay at best, poor at times. Actually, our entire cruise was the same. Staff and servers doing their job, nothing more. Unimpressive, really.
CDRMark Posted October 16, 2009 #20 Share Posted October 16, 2009 Surf and Turf two nights ago (traditional seating) and the Surf was "pre-semidetached" as it is often seen in restaurants. One small knife swipe rendered it free. Not bad, either. Cheers Mark
cruisequeen10 Posted October 16, 2009 #21 Share Posted October 16, 2009 Just off the Veendam last week too and my friend had the surf and turf twice and they did not remove the shell. Sorry to say the sole was not on the menu nor was the pea soup. But the duck a la orange was great.
