Kauai port idea and Transportation issues

Kauai,

 

Is anything close to the port that can be walked to? What is the public transportation like on Kauai?

 

Going over xmas and all the cars seem to be rented, and non of the excursions interest me much or way to expensive.

 

Any suggestions would be great thaks

Lihue is in walking distance from the pier or you can take the free shuttle. Lots of shopping close by so they offer free shuttles to get you there. ;) There's also a very nice beach right behind all that shopping!

 

In order to see the island I would HIGHLY suggest Wings Over Kauai www.wingsoverkauai.com. They are WONDERFUL! A little out of the ordinary with the plane rather than helicoptor but it was the perfect way to see everything the island has to offer!! And they pick you up at the stip mall closest to the pier. The price can't be beat either...and don't let the low price make you think the quality is less!! It's a perfect way for a nice private tour (only 3 seats!) of the island and the pilot (Bruce) is very knowledgeable.
