kath00 Posted March 19, 2010 Author #27 Share Posted March 19, 2010 Just following up since I originally started this thread. I am on the phone with Verizon right now and the agent is CLUELESS! He said I needed nothing and all my rates would be the same as the US. I pulled up this thread by searching and here is all the great advice. Now I am telling the rep what to do!:eek: I just asked for him to transfer me to Global Svcs and the new rep knows exactly what I am talking about... Hurray! Anyway, if you need to do this, here are the steps... 1) Call Verizon, say "customer service" during the annoying menu option 2) Ask to talk to a Global Service Specialist RIGHT AWAY. They will transfer you. 3) Ask to have a "Global Data Plan" starting date X. If that date is in the future (ie your cruise is not for another week), you will have to call back to have the plan turned OFF at the end, or else the elevated rate of $69 a month will continue indefinitely. They can activate it but cannot deactivate it if the date is not starting today. OR 4) Call the day before your trip (like I just did) and activate the Global Data Plan for TODAY. Then they can put in a termination date in the future (ie 1 week from now) without you having to remember to call back. This is what I just did and now I will have a prorated $19 bill ($17 for the week plus since it's the day before the cruise I activated a day early to save me a phone call the day I get back)... 5) Ask for the confirmation email with the instructions for dialing internationally. 6) Once you get off the phone and your global data plan is activated, dial *228, then press option 2 to update your phone. I am told that to make calls on the ship, I need to dial 0111(areacode)(phone number). To check voicemail, the speed dial won't work so you dial 0111(areacode)(your cel phone number), then press # sign and put in your password. And that should be it. All emails will be free to send and receive with this global plan. Phone calls are still $2.49 a minute due to ship roaming charges. Texts are $0.50 to send and $0.05 to receive. I told my whole family to communicate via email... That means no additional charges. You are good to go! I hope this helps others.
