We have found with restaurants, resorts, hotels, cruises, etc... there will be the 1 Stars & 5 Stars that will aire their opportunities.

Sometimes or most it is because of a disappointment that they did not understand what they were reading. We go to a resort in NY State and many wrong predictions and many love the place and return for over the 30+ years.

My all time favorite Yelp complaint was about a restaurant in Cambria, California.  It was across the street from the beach, had floor to ceiling windows so there was a fantastic view of the ocean.  The food and service were top notch.  Someone wrote a one star review because the rolls were too hot.

Is the Boat (Muster) Drill necessary right away?

We just got on board and there's a lot to do. Can we do it later?

Yip!

And that's why everything is closed during the muster drill.

I was on a Circle Japan cruise and the captain decided to skip Toyama to go around a typhoon instead of through it. Substituted over night in Busan, Korea. This couple actually filed a complaint!! The waves were hitting my window and I wasn't on a bottom deck!! Honestly instead of being happy that the captain kept us safe, gave everyone a significant refund, plus onboard credit they sent an email to PCL that we missed a port!! When we got back to Japan the full brunt of the typhoon was apparent. Trees and debris everywhere

I thought it was a joke..

We were still in port and someone was complaining:

"We booked an Ocean View Balcony, we only see the terminal"

They must have felt a little silly when the ship left the port!

one of my best friends who i've known my entire life, but who has a tendency to want to be the biggest foodie of any given group and who sometimes likes to one-up others with regard to her travel experiences made a big deal on a ship once because she wanted a gibson at the bar and kept going on and on that they didn't have some particular kind of onion that was supposed to go in it.

it's a cruise ship, not a bar in manhattan where the drinks are 30 bucks. you can't just decide you want some highly uncommon thing and expect it to be on this random boat out in the ocean. she's my friend, but it was a bit embarrassing to watch her try and go back and fourth with this poor lady bartender about how they should have this special onion for her drink.

What kind of onion did the bartender use?  Not a Gibson drinker, I just researched the recipe for a Gibson.  Read two of them and both agreed that the onion ought to be a pickled pearl onion.  If the bartender used a pearl onion, the Gibson ought to have its distinctive taste as compared to a Martini's taste with an olive or lemon twist.

it's been years, but if i recall correctly, they just didn't have an onion, and my friend had been drinking already and just got a little belligerent about it and took what i felt was a condescending tone...as if knowing something about some cocktail imparted some status on her and for me, it came off as a bit distasteful. when you travel, you should be gracious and you should be there to experience what there is to offer in the place where you are. if they don't have drinks with onions, then drink what they do have or just try something new. at the end of the day, a cocktail is a cocktail and it's not worth any stress at all if you have to have one over another.

I'm a cherry or twist person myself.

Bourbon, vermouth and a dash of bitters and I'm just fine. Simple enough and you can get it anywhere. If a bartender says they don't have vermouth or bitters, then I'd just tell them to surprise me.

I am a non-Martini/Gibson drinker with or without a twist, an olive, an onion, or a cherry.  But, please, Mr./Ms. Bartender, a dish of olives would be appreciated with whatever I am drinking.

I think olives are a reasonable request. Like bitters and vermouth. Any bar with even the most rudimentary selection would have those. Most people don't drink a drink that has an onion in it, and most bars don't have onions. My friend should have just gotten a dirty martini and eaten some olives and called it a day.

I'm wondering if we will see a new spurt of "crazy things" as cruising returns and perhaps some new people are trying cruising.  Hopefully so as this has been an entertaining thread!  🙂

Your hope may be starting to be fulfilled with the advent of the beverage packages that are being offered.  Even on the likes of HAL.  Friends on the Zuiderdam currently have reported that on the first night out of Vancouver, in the Pinnacle Grill, an table near-by with 4 guests had obviously taken advantage of their package (assuming they had one) and were loud and "very happy".  Upon leaving, some of the Stewards had to help them exit the PG.  One does not expect to see that on a HAL vessel, particularly when dining in a specialty restaurant such as the Pinnacle Grill.

One does not expect to see that, as you say, especially on HAL!  Good for stories for this thread, not so good for the other passengers who have to put up with the obnoxious people!

Such types have been around for years.  My first cruise in 1970 on Rotterdam V in the Skyroom Bar one evening:  one gentleman was so under the influence that when he tried to walk across the floor, he fell.  The Stewards put him back on his stool.  Repeat performance shortly, they took him and escorted him to the elevator opening into the Lounge to return him to his cabin.  Very shortly, before the Stewards even returned, the elevator doors opened and there he was again.  After another performance, the Stewards took him and, we were told, he would remain in the brig overnight.

People watching is the best free entertainment on a cruise ship at times!

Craziest thing I ever witnessed myself was a woman in the hall a few rooms down asking the room steward on a sea day if she could" get an umbrella for her balcony because with the ship sailing in this direction the sun is way too bright and she really could not enjoy her balcony under these conditions" I had to walk back into my room so I could laugh all I wanted without being seen. I never would have been able to make it down the that long hall without rolling on the floor with laughter. I was so temped to stick a little drink umbrella in her mailbox.

On our honeymoon cruise 35 years ago, we befriended the couple in the owner's suite. After a night of much eating and drinking the gentleman decided he wanted to play the piano at midnight. So. . . . . .

He called the butler and asked him to bring a piano to his suite. He was quite upset when the request was turned down. Next port of call, my wife and I found a toy store and bought our new friend a toy piano. Yes, he played it for us that night.
