rainyPNW Posted February 9, 2010 #1 Share Posted February 9, 2010 During our recent cruise to Cabo, Mazatlan and PV on Mariner of the Seas, I created a time-lapse video of all of the port departures and arrivals, start to finish. 12,000+ individual frames stitched together and animated with a soundtrack. Image control software was Granite Bay Time Lapse, tied to a Canon G2. Raw sequencing via Quick Time Pro, post processing via Virtual Dub, and final assembly in Movie Maker (Vista). It was fun to make and the results I think came out better than I had expected! You can see it here: Let me know what you think! dancing bear Posted February 9, 2010 #9 Share Posted February 9, 2010 What a marvelous job you did with that photography. We were on the Mariner with you for that cruise, and it brought back great memories. And, now we know whose yacht that was in Puerto Vallarta! Thanks so much... Arubamoose Posted February 9, 2010 #11 Share Posted February 9, 2010 Way cool.... We are planning on taking the Brilliance into these ports and it was awesome watching all the marine traffic and seeing the logistics of where the ship "parked" and the approach it took. We just got back from Freedom on the east coast sailing the week following your trip. Enjoyed the sunsets so much ourselves but had clouds right above the horizon. Wish I were back on ship. Thanks for the view. Julia

rainyPNW Posted February 9, 2010 Author #22 Share Posted February 9, 2010 Wow guys - thanks for all the very nice comments! I didn't expect such a response. If anyone is interested in how to do this - it's not too terribly hard, but is involved and takes a LOT of time, both shooting as well as the all-important post production. But I'd be happy to email with you if you want to know the process. Dave RainyPNW
DocJohnB Posted February 10, 2010 #23 Share Posted February 10, 2010 Please post this in the Cruise video section of the main board. Let all cruisers, not just the RCI folks enjoy this amazing bit of photography . . and it is that . . . . amazing. Thanks for the time, etc., you put into it. southerngoose Posted February 10, 2010 #24 Share Posted February 10, 2010 I've been reading about time lapse video so I'm very curious. Did you leave your camera alone on your balcony or did you just sit with it for a long time? Did you use a tripod and did you fasten it to the ship (ie the railings or something)? Does your Canon Powershot G2 have time lapse capability built in or do you have some other device that triggers the shutter? I have cheap camera that will do timelapse video but it only shoots one photo every 30 secs (or less frequently). I hear that won't make for a nice timelapse and yours was 5.5-12 secs apart. I can get an inexpensive device to control the shutter of my expensive camera, but I think that 12,000 shots is a bit risky for that one.
Sunkissed Mommy Posted February 10, 2010 #25 Share Posted February 10, 2010 Phenomenal work! I wish I could create such a masterpiece. It is amazing what you see, and don't see, throughout the day! This is something I want to watch just before bed because it would relax me and help me get into cruise mode, I always sleep like a rock on cruise ships.
