cmhatter Posted March 30, 2010 #1 Share Posted March 30, 2010 I have never sailed on CCL (only RCCL) but I am booked for May 15 on the Dream. I heard rumor about a sewage smell that was pretty noticable and obnoxious. I called Carnival to make sure that this issue was fixed prior to booking my cruise. The person I spoke to reassured me that the ship underwent repairs to fix this issue by rerouting some stuff. My question is for those who have sailed on the Dream recently: Is the sewage smell fixed or does it still exist?
Chef P Posted March 30, 2010 #2 Share Posted March 30, 2010 I was on the March 13th sailing and YES you can still smell it, not always the same spot, various areas such as the Lido buffet area, Aft pool area... Serenity area to name a few....Not a constant strong smell, more of a whiff here and there....
bakechef Posted March 30, 2010 #3 Share Posted March 30, 2010 I encountered it once in the serenity area (small area not the whole serenity area) and my friends noticed it at the top of the slide. I didn't smell it anywhere in the interior of the ship. For me it was a non-issue.
sunlover5 Posted March 30, 2010 #4 Share Posted March 30, 2010 Just got off March 27. Big issue that week of sailing. They were deodorizing the hallways, etc. The putt putt, slides and serenity areas were vary noticeable. On other cruises you might smell it now and then, but it is obvious this ship does have some kind of problem causing it.

Where were they deodorizing? I was on the same sailing.
ladycaveat Posted March 31, 2010 #6 Share Posted March 31, 2010 I was on the Dream last January and I didn't smell anything that in the least way was unpleasant.
hokalier Posted March 31, 2010 #7 Share Posted March 31, 2010 I just came off the Dream on the 27th as well. I was on the Main deck and I did smell it done there frequently, usually near the laundry room. However I never smelled it in the room only in the hallway. I really didn't find it bothersome at all. AnnaP Posted March 31, 2010 #8 Share Posted March 31, 2010 Off the dream on the 27th as well. The smell was terrible at the top of the water slide on one day. I smelled it in other places but not enough to bother me much. My husband however was pretty put off by it and smelled it more frequently in other places. It wasn't in the Casino for sure! A. anitainwa Posted March 31, 2010 #9 Share Posted March 31, 2010 We were on the transAtlantic sailing in Sept/Oct and on the ship for 16 days, did not notice a smell at all.
sunlover5 Posted March 31, 2010 #10 Share Posted March 31, 2010 We were on Deck 7 aft. Never in the cabin. It always started about 4 cabins up from ours, everytime we walked to the elevator. There was a group staying in that area, and they could hardly stand in the hall to talk!
LHP Posted March 31, 2010 #11 Share Posted March 31, 2010 We sailed on the Dream Dec 3rd and we never smelled a thing. Some folks reported smelling something on deck 2 on that cruise, but a friend that walked deck 2 several times a day every day...did not smell anything on that cruise. However this same friend just cruised on the Dream again and did notice it from time to time...I believe it was also on deck 2. Having sailed on 85% of the Carnival ships....most times you will get a "whiff" of something every now and then. Not every cruise and not every day...... it has never been bad enough to deter me from cruising... it is an enclosed system....and something I have just come to expect on a cruise ship from time to time. salty dingo Posted March 31, 2010 #12 Share Posted March 31, 2010 Is the chance to get a whiff of a sewer smell a reason to not book? It does not sound like it is a big deal, from the descriptions here.
ooulio Posted March 31, 2010 #13 Share Posted March 31, 2010 We were on FEB 20. Really only smelled in in a few places. WE were on the 7th floor. Across from the laundry room was awful. That was the worst place. We had suites. Never smelled it in there . We were down the hall from the laundry room. Near us was okay. I have never smelled it in any of our cruises from them. That made 9 for us.
Saphira7 Posted March 31, 2010 #14 Share Posted March 31, 2010 I was on the March 20th sailing and I didn't think it was an issue. I was on deck 8 midship and never once smelled it. However, I did smell it the first day we got there on deck 6 and one other time we noticed it but, I don't remember where. We didn't hang out in Serenity or the waterslides so I can't comment about how the others noticed it there.
Cruzaholic41 Posted March 31, 2010 #15 Share Posted March 31, 2010 I never once smelled it in my room, but the smell was always there in the hallway. Most days it was faint, but on others, it was almost nauseating.

MrPete Posted March 31, 2010 #20 Share Posted March 31, 2010 What makes this ship so special that it still has that NEW ship smell?
jules815 Posted March 31, 2010 #21 Share Posted March 31, 2010 Okay Pete, you've just made me spit hot tea onto my keyboard with that one!! That is too funny!! We'll be sailing on Dream in a Cove in June, and I hope the sewage smell isn't too horrible. This will be my husband's first time sailing on Carnival, and since my Destiny cruise, all I've been telling him is how great Carnival is! It would have to be pretty bad to bother us though. We've always had a whiff of sewage here or there on our RC Mariner cruises. Many times we've walked through the hallway on deck 7 where our room was, and smelled it. Never all the time, and never in the same spot. On Destiny, I smelled it (pretty strong one evening) near the photo gallery. (I guess I've always figured it's something that happens on a cruise ship.)
denisey Posted March 31, 2010 #22 Share Posted March 31, 2010 I was on the Dream on the Feb 20th sailing and smelled a slight whiff on the aft stairs around deck 6 and 7 most the times we used those stairs. Didn't bother me and I don't think I would have really thought anything of it, except for all the press this has gotten. The Dream wasn't my favorite class of ships, but the smell wouldn't keep me away again.
waldocruiser1 Posted March 31, 2010 #23 Share Posted March 31, 2010 So I will ask, have any of the "gime gime" people asked at the pursers desk about the smell, if it is as bad as people say is Carnival actually doing anything about it? Fixing it, compensating for it, like the group that was at the smell area a few posts back that could not stand in the hall and talk it was so bad. I know I will be flamed for the question, but maybe it is time to hit Carnival to get it fixed, if everyone keeps saying "it wasnt that bad" they will not have to fix it. In my opinion, (and I have not smelled it Yet) the New Ship smell should not be SEWER Kinda funny that they do the commercial about the "new ship smell" and this ship has a smell. poobears Posted March 31, 2010 #24 Share Posted March 31, 2010 We always catch whiffs of sewer on a cruise. Think that's normal considering how much they are hauling around. If it's constant in a public or room area then yes I would consider a reason not to book. I would not enjoy using the serenity, slides, cabin etc if it smelled like crap the whole time. A lot comes down to how sensitive of a nose you have too. Some may think aww it's not that bad, others may think OMG I'm gonna hurl. Any constant bad smell is something they need to fix. waldocruiser1 Posted March 31, 2010 #25 Share Posted March 31, 2010 I think I know what the smell is, have you ever watched the show Deadliest Catch, the show about crab fishing? When they catch the crab they put it in the bottom of the boat, filled with water, that must be where they keep the "poop" from the ship, that is why it moves around, it depends on the movement of the ship, and who just pooped (area of the ship) when the hatch for the poop container opens, so it can be dumped in, the smell comes out. I apologize for saying "poop" so much and making a stink of it all. Sorry wrong name of show
