Mariott Stellaris

I have never used Priceline and am tempted to try but we DON'T want a Marriott, can you specify a hotel brand that you do not want?

There's no guarantee of a specific hotel. Only the hotel class category, like "Resort," or "4*" etc. If you absolutely must stay at any specifc particular hotel, then you'll have to make a regular reservation with that hotel.

Not yet as there are 8 of us going on the trip - - meeting with another couple next Wednesday and we will discuss. Actually, this all started as it is their 35th Wedding Anniversay and they have NEVER been on a cruise. I am just going along for the ride and acting as T/A for the group! lol

Have a great weekend.

Donna we are sailing on the AOS on the 1-30 sailing. A couple of us have gotten the Marriott for $110. You should consider changing your date if it would work for your group.

I already paid for the Stellaris via Priceline, but I thought I read somewhere they charge an additional fee when you check in/out. Does anyone know if this is a fact and if so, what the fee amounts to and what it is for?

This would be a resort fee that all resort type hotels in San Juan would charge. However, I do not know the amount, but yes, there will be a fee. I have a Marriott say in November through Priceline and I expect to pay a fee as well.

It is a percentage of your room rate. I feel safe telling you it will probably be between $10.00 and $20.00 for the resort fee. Not really a big deal, but I don't like the idea!:)

I have also read that people booking through Priceline were not charged an additional fee at the hotel. It would be nice to hear from those who have returned to see if they were charged.

The standard is being charged the fee, I have heard many protest it and get it waived. Last time I was there I needed the internet, so I paid it. At the price I got the room for via Priceline, I don't sweat it!

How do get them to waive the "resort" fee if you booked via Priceline?

Toonjie, I noticed you sailed on SOS in May. Did you write a review? I enjoyed reading your other reviews. We are sailing SOS for the first time in October.

We also stayed at the Marriott Stellaris in 2009 and "opted out" of the resort fees. The taxes and fees that are on the Priceline confirmation are separate from the resort fees charged by the hotel.

I'm going to bring a copy of my receipt from Priceline that says I paid "taxes and fees". Hope that works.

Last November, 2009 my first bid of $84 for one night pre-cruise for a 4* for October, 2010 was accepted and I was awarded (and upgraded to) the Marriott Stellaris. I was shocked! Very much looking forward to our stay there. Pictures look great, thank you!

Can you still use the pool and beach if you opt out? Exactly how do you opt out?

Just tell them on check in that you will not be using the resort facilities and do not wish to be charged the fees. You can still have full access to the beach and pool, however, if you want a beach umbrella there is a charge. Not sure of the exact amount but I think it's only a few bucks. Not a big deal. The resort fees include, beach umbrella, $20 casino coupon, 1 hr. bicycle rental, a fancy looking bottle of water in your room, internet access, free local & 800 calls. The fees are a % of your room rate and may be worthwhile. Since we are staying 2 days pre and 1 day post cruise, we may just take advantage of the facilities. :)

We certainly won't be using any resort facilities since we land @ 11:30 pm. We probably won't check in until 12:30 or so, sleep, have breakfast, check out and get a taxi to the ship. Maybe we'll walk the beach to snap a few photos, but have no interest in anything else. I can certainly understand the charge if you use all the amenities......thanks for the clarification.

I used priceline for one night pre-cruise for March 12, 2011 and was awarded the Marriott Stellaris for a bid of $120. I am so excited to stay at this hotel. I have stayed at both Hotel Milano(average) and Intercontinental(Great). Was curious what everyone enjoyed the most about the Marriott. Are there good places to eat close? Walgreens close? How far to the port from the hotel?

Congrats! You'll love the Marriott! Yes, a rental car will be a lot cheaper than taxis. Parking can be tough in OSJ, but there are parking garages and a large lot down by Paseo de Princessa, so you may have to walk, but can always find parking somewhere.

Maybe staying 3 days in San Juan it would make it worth getting a rental car. However, driving in San Juan is not easy unless you know your way around and parking is a nightmare. I wouldn't do it myself - too stressful and dangerous. I traveled to San Juan once per six weeks for 6 years, so I know. However, if you will be trying to do a lot of touristy things, the taxi fares can add up. If you drive, be very alert and allow extra time wherever you go.

If you are only worrying about getting from your hotel to downtown OSJ, use the buses. Seriously, they work out great, and they used to be only $.50 each way, per person, from the Condado area to OSJ. Not sure about other areas. When we were there in late 2008 (a stop on the Solstice) we actually lucked out and (thanks to an election coming up) they had the buses for free. We don't expect that to happen again, but it was nice for busing out to the Ajili Mojili restaurant for dinner.

I won't say the bus station is the cleanest, but it is easy to navigate, and once you step out of the station you are in OSJ, with one of the free shuttles right in front that will take you all over OSJ. I speak NO Spanish, and had no problems. Everyone was very helpful.
