Insurance for changed itinerary?

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this is even an insurance issue. But if your ship diverts it's course due to weather (ie: hurricane) and you end up sailing around instead of stopping at intended port, can that be claimed through your travel insurance? For instance, instead of a three-port trip, you end up on a two-port or one-port trip. Or do cruise lines generally find other ports to stop at in lieu of the original port due to inclement weather?

Sometimes the cruiselines find alternate ports, most of the time they do not. Your compensation consists of a refund of the port taxes for that particular port. Sometimes, if you are lucky, the line throws in some OBC if the missed port was their fault (i.e. mechanical breakdown.)

Travel insurance does not cover this at all. Once you leave for your trip, there is nothing for insurance to cover (except for medical or emergency trips home) until you arrive at the end of your trip.

Your contract with the cruise line will state that you agree that they have the right to change their itinerary at will with no compensation. Basically, you're saying that you have no problem with that. Since you're agreeing that you're 100% OK with this if it happens you can't expect an insurer to compensate you for any disappointment if it really does happen.

However, perhaps you've arranged a non-refundable shore excursion and because of a mechanical problem with the ship they skip that port. Some insurers will cover that loss even though they will not cover the disappointment of the change in itinerary. This is from one Travelex plan:

"ITINERARY CHANGE

Covers certain expenses if the travel supplier makes a change in your

itinerary after your scheduled departure date which prevents you from

participating in that event/activity."

Note that the change in itinerary has to occur post-departure. If you're notified of the change prior to boarding the ship the coverage may not apply.
