lazarru Posted April 22, 2010 #1 Share Posted April 22, 2010 I think I had seen someone post at one point that there are some books that have maps of the coast line so you can ID sights along the way, can anyone point out some good ones, or even better if there is anything on-line for that? Alaska Cruises Handbook; by Upton It is a mile by mile guidebook, including a huge pull out map and smaller sectional maps on the book pages. It is really awesome to be able to look mile by mile and have things pointed out to see. I plan on taking the book and map with me next month on our cruise. LindaKE Posted April 22, 2010 #3 Share Posted April 22, 2010 I see you're going on Princess. We got a book on line, The Alaska Cruise Companion, A Princess Exclusive, that had highlights mile by mile. It included maps, some history and was very informative. We really enjoyed having it. This was 7 yrars ago, but it may still be available. I found it by going to Princess' web site and looking under gifts.

pspercy Posted April 22, 2010 #5 Share Posted April 22, 2010 I believe the Princess book is also Upton's work. I have a couple of his maps I kept from a Princess catalogue a few years ago, they're excellent. I have a book called "Alaska by Cruise Ship" by Anne Vipond. It also has a map included which has mile markers on it as well as page references. Lots of good info. Trouble with maps will be keeping them under control in the breeze:) For mile-by-mile driving you need Milepost.

adkkev Posted April 22, 2010 #8 Share Posted April 22, 2010 Sorry if this is dumb question but does it guide you mile by mile for driving or for cruising along the coast? You can't drive along the coast ... there are no roads that connect any of the cities/towns/villages. Only Haines and Skagway have roads that connect them with the interior (Yukon). The Milepost covers the Alaskan Highway from Canada (Calgary I believe) to Alaska.
mih13 Posted April 22, 2010 #9 Share Posted April 22, 2010 If I am going on a Princess cruise is there much difference between The Alaska Cruise Companion (for Princess) and The Alaska Cruise Handbook? Rare TiogaCruiser Posted April 22, 2010 #10 Share Posted April 22, 2010 If you have some time and a printer you can print out a set of full size charts from NOAA. Google NOAA charts. Look for experimental downloadable charts. Choose which ones you want from the catalog to get the right chart. The file is a PDF and you do have to tape them together. The advantage is you have the navigational aides clearly marked and can determine what mountains and glaciers, etc. You are looking at. If you can post a link to the cruise you are going on I may be able to post back a list of chart numbers and the link. Am on cell phone now so the screen is too small and won't run flash. ~TC

Rare TiogaCruiser Posted April 23, 2010 #14 Share Posted April 23, 2010 Hi Lazaruu- The link for the Booklet Charts Catalog: http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/AlaskaBookletCharts.htm Number: 503 (Gulf of Alaska Strait of Juan de Fuca to Kodiak Island) good overview of area Anchorage to north of Vancouver Island. (I plan to use this one for our 14 day cruise this summer). (It’s going on our wall with poster putty and I plan to make a "DR" track on it where we are.) http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/531_BookletChart_HomeEd.pdf These are recommendations for your trip: You may want to take a more indepth look at the chart locator and determine if there are others you want. (YMMV):D Day 1- Sailing from Whittier: Chart 16706 (Prince William Sound-Valdez Arm and Port Valdez;Valdez Narrows;Valdez and Valdez Marine Terminal) For Detail 16706 (While it is reasonably light out): http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/16706_BookletChart_HomeEd.pdf Larger scale: PWS 16700 http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/16700_BookletChart_HomeEd.pdf Day 2- Hubbard Glacier Detail 16761 Yakutat Bay;Yakutat Harbor (for the trip into the harbor) http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/16761_BookletChart_HomeEd.pdf The coastal section on way to Glacier Bay and INCLUDES Glacier Bay- (Cross Sound to Yakutat Bay) http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/16760_BookletChart_HomeEd.pdf Day 3- Glacier Bay For trip in toward GB, use Chart 17302 (Icy Strait and Cross Sound;Inian Cove;Elfin Cove). You will be amazed what detail you can see and the additional glaciers you will spot using the chart. http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/17302_BookletChart_HomeEd.pdf It looks like 17318 is Glacier Bay- and it looks like they have re-scanned it recently. (The Tarr Inlet section was blank when we made our copies). But it was well worth taking a copy- or do what we did and buy a Pocket Chart version (which is intact) for only $5.95. There are lots of named peaks in that quadrant. http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/17318_BookletChart_HomeEd.pdf Chart 17300- use for Day 3,4 and 5 (a good, large scale chart) http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/17300_BookletChart_HomeEd.pdf Day 4 Skagway (be sure to be on deck for the trip up the Lynn Canal) North Section- Lynn Canal-Point Sherman to Skagway;Lutak Inlet;Skagway and Nahku Bay;Portage Cove, Chilkoot Inlet http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/17317_BookletChart_HomeEd.pdf Southern Section- Lynn Canal-Icy Str. to Point Sherman;Funter Bay;Chatham Strait http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/17316_BookletChart_HomeEd.pdf Day 5 Juneau area http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/17320_BookletChart_HomeEd.pdf For the trip from Juneau to Ketchikan: Chattham Straight (don’t miss is- its grand!) http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/17400_BookletChart_HomeEd.pdf Hecate Strait to Etolin Island, including Behm and Portland Canals http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/17420_BookletChart_HomeEd.pdf Day 5 Ketchikan (last 2 charts above probably will be used on the way into Ketchikan) http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/17428_BookletChart_HomeEd.pdf I printed my set of charts and taped them together before we left. Some of those I knew we would use a lot I “laminated” with clear wide tape. (It did make them heavy- but mist proof). I wrote on the charts and made photo notes as we sailed along. (Cool souvenier). I made myself a grid for the trip that showed me which charts I wanted each day, then filed them in a small folder with pockets. It made it easy to pull out what I needed each day. Hope this helps! ~TC

I have a copy of the Cruise Handbook, but was wondering if I should also get a copy of the other. Thank you! There are a few subtle changes: the Princess version has a few Princess logos and a few other Princessy things, and is sold on the Princess Alaska cruises. Also, there are some updates on the new versions, but if you can get a deal on an older version, you will be fine. We kept checking the ships navigation channel and marked up our map with the actual route taken. You can check Amazon http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_15?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=alaska+cruise+companion&sprefix=alaska+cruise+c or Half Price Books for some good prices on older versions of either book. I think I paid $9-10. Make sure the map in included! That was the fun part.

pizzalady1 Posted April 24, 2010 #20 Share Posted April 24, 2010 Does the Princess book include Hubbard Glacier? I think that is new to the Princess itinerary for this year but not sure. Yes it does. It book covers from mile 0 which is Seattle to Mile 470 which is Fairbanks. One side of the map is the cruise area from Seattle to Anchorage and the other side covers from Ketchikan and the Aleutian Islands to Barrow. The Princess Patters references page numbers to read for the next day's cruise area. I have the Princess 2005 version and once or twice the page numbers were off by a page or two because of a new picture in the newer version, but it was never difficult to figure it out.
