Book with map of coast

I think I had seen someone post at one point that there are some books that have maps of the coast line so you can ID sights along the way, can anyone point out some good ones, or even better if there is anything on-line for that?

Alaska Cruises Handbook; by Upton

It is a mile by mile guidebook, including a huge pull out map and smaller sectional maps on the book pages.

 

It is really awesome to be able to look mile by mile and have things pointed out to see.

I plan on taking the book and map with me next month on our cruise.

I see you're going on Princess. We got a book on line, The Alaska Cruise Companion, A Princess Exclusive, that had highlights mile by mile. It included maps, some history and was very informative. We really enjoyed having it. This was 7 yrars ago, but it may still be available. I found it by going to Princess' web site and looking under gifts.

I believe the Princess book is also Upton's work. I have a couple of his maps I kept from a Princess catalogue a few years ago, they're excellent.

 

I have a book called "Alaska by Cruise Ship" by Anne Vipond. It also has a map included which has mile markers on it as well as page references. Lots of good info.

 

Trouble with maps will be keeping them under control in the breeze:)

 

For mile-by-mile driving you need Milepost.

You can't drive along the coast ... there are no roads that connect any of the cities/towns/villages. Only Haines and Skagway have roads that connect them with the interior (Yukon).

 

The Milepost covers the Alaskan Highway from Canada (Calgary I believe) to Alaska.

If I am going on a Princess cruise is there much difference between The Alaska Cruise Companion (for Princess) and The Alaska Cruise Handbook? I have a copy of the Cruise Handbook, but was wondering if I should also get a copy of the other. Thank you!

If you have some time and a printer you can print out a set of full size charts from NOAA. Google NOAA charts. Look for experimental downloadable charts. Choose which ones you want from the catalog to get the right chart. The file is a PDF and you do have to tape them together. The advantage is you have the navigational aides clearly marked and can determine what mountains and glaciers, etc. You are looking at.

 

If you can post a link to the cruise you are going on I may be able to post back a list of chart numbers and the link. Am on cell phone now so the screen is too small and won't run flash.

It looks like 17318 is Glacier Bay- and it looks like they have re-scanned it recently. (The Tarr Inlet section was blank when we made our copies). But it was well worth taking a copy- or do what we did and buy a Pocket Chart version (which is intact) for only $5.95. There are lots of named peaks in that quadrant.

I printed my set of charts and taped them together before we left. Some of those I knew we would use a lot I “laminated” with clear wide tape. (It did make them heavy- but mist proof). I wrote on the charts and made photo notes as we sailed along. (Cool souvenier). I made myself a grid for the trip that showed me which charts I wanted each day, then filed them in a small folder with pockets. It made it easy to pull out what I needed each day.

Yes it does. It book covers from mile 0 which is Seattle to Mile 470 which is Fairbanks. One side of the map is the cruise area from Seattle to Anchorage and the other side covers from Ketchikan and the Aleutian Islands to Barrow.

 

The Princess Patters references page numbers to read for the next day's cruise area. I have the Princess 2005 version and once or twice the page numbers were off by a page or two because of a new picture in the newer version, but it was never difficult to figure it out.
