Baltic ferries

Recommended Posts

Baesue here;

Hello everyone. I was hoping that someone could provide information on the Baltic and/or Scandanavia ferry system. We are planning a transantlantic cruise that terminates in Copenhagen. Before Copenhagen, there are stops in LeHarve and Rotenberg. We don't want to take another 7 or 10 cruise departing Copenhagen, but we would like to see other areas while we're there. Any suggestions?

Thanks

There are a number of ferry options out of Copenhagen, of which the Copenhagen to Oslo, Norway is an excellent choice. We took a rail/ferry from Copenhagen to Sweden with rail transport to Norway. There are many overnight ferries that have regular routes to Newcastle, England; Bergen, Norway; Stockholm, Sweden; Helsinki, Finland; Talin, Latvia; Gdansk, Poland; and a number of other Baltic ports.

We took a number of these ferries when they were coupled with the Eurail pass, and enjoyed the ease of getting around on our own schedule. Most of the ships are very clean and comfortable, and overnight accomodations include deck chairs, and various cabin choices. Food is also available, from snacks to formal dining. We sailed the Symphony from Stockholm/Helsinki when they had the only interior promanade deck in any other ship! Cannot remember all the ferry routs we took, But the Colour Line and Polferry Lines come to mind.

Hope this isn't too late, but also look to see if the Viking Line and the Tallink/Silja line meet your needs. Their websites are at:

http://www.vikingline.fi/index.asp?lang=en and http://www.tallinksilja.com/en/

I had success sailing several times between Turku and Stockholm and between Helsinki and Tallinn, although their networks are bigger than that. Enjoy!
