Windjammer Food

Recommended Posts

We have not cruised prior. We understand The Windjammer is a buffet, of which we have gone to several at casinos. At those casino buffet's there is always so many different foods, if you do not find something you are just not hungry.

Would you define The Windjammer more detail.... Thank you.

There are many different foods in the windjammer ... salads, meats, sandwiches, pizza (on some ships), sides, desserts, etc. These change on a day-to-day, meal-to-meal basis with some things are always offered.

We've been on a couple of RCI cruises as well as Carnival and Princess.

I can't comment on the Carnival buffet because we could never get to it. Horizon Court on Princess was a disaster for food quality.

In the opinion of my little travelling party, the Windjammer is the best of the bunch for both food and crowd control. It does stay pretty much the same everyday so on a long cruise it might get old BUT we do 5-7 dayers and we've always been quite happy with it.

You will, I'm sure get contrary opinions.

Enjoy.

They always had some type of meat carving and lots of other entree selections (fish, chicken, pasta etc) The 2 ships we have been on (Majesty & Monarch) also had a large Asian/Eastern selection. DS really enjoyed it at breakfast as a nice change of pace. Desserts seemed to be a bit lacking IMHO but I LOVED the cookies.

The Windjammer is nice and you'll find something to eat.......but I've been to several casino buffets and they don't begin to compare........the casino's I've been to has 4x the choices........guess they don't want you to leave the casino to go eat someplace:D

But the Windjammer is nice and you should find many selections that will make you happy.

Yes, it's a buffet, all you care to eat, breakfast/lunch/dinner, with different foods at different serving stations; choices rotate daily. Dispensers for water, coffee, tea, lemonade, juice in the am; waiters are available for other drink choices. Kinda like the casinos, but no keno boards. It would be hard to starve aboard a cruise ship.

It is just that buffet food. It is not bad food just not the best. The omlette station during breakfast is nice.

I agree. IMHO the WJ in the evening is where RCI does the best job. A nice selection for those wanting to skip the main dining room at times.

Do try the main dining room for dinner and breakfast....being served (rather than serving yourself) makes a huge difference! No searching for condiments, no searching for a clean table while juggling plates and utensils and drinks....it's just much nicer than the buffet, and it's all included in your fare.

I would say the WJ is "somewhat" comparable to the Indian casino's Buffets..Not like the ones in Las Vegas at the big hotels..We love the WJ and probably you will too.I also enjoy the Golden Corral when I go home to visit Ky.

I'd say 1/4 of what you're probably used to at a casino buffet; and unlike a previous poster I found the Princess buffet much better than RCI; although they all get old after a few meals, so I stick to the MDR and DR lunch when possible. The pizza, hot dogs, hamburger grill on Princess is much better than the stuff that's always out in the Windjammer, and sometimes not much other choice.

Edit: I will say the waitstaff service in the Windjammer is far superior to Princess, where you're lucky to get a drink other than self serve water or coffee at all.

at breakfast windjammer had everything from cereal to omelettes, eggs your way, meats, pastries etc, you can also have a sit down breakfast to order in the dining room, this had eggs benedict etc and we found a less hectic experience. At lunch windjammer has a large selection of foods again something for every taste pizzas, burgers, salads, stews, carvery etc but there is also a dining room brasserie for a sit down meal with quite a large menu if you fancy something different. at night again very large selection and also in the jade area of the windjammer tables are set with clothes , glasses etc and there is a selection of sushi and asian style foods. There are also a couple of places on the promenade you can get sandwiches, pastries and pizzas from or of course there is always room service or the speciality restaurants.

Depending upon what ship you sail on the Windjammer cafe is a large food court/buffet where you will find a variety of foods. Yes, it similar to those casino buffet's or similar to a Home Town Buffet. The food ranges from excellent to mediocre. Food is set up in islands/station with a specialty section (Asian). Usually a salad bar, hot entrees with a meat carver, hamburger/hot dogs, sandwiches, deserts/fruits, and beverage station. On my last cruise on the Mariner of the Seas the Windjammer cafe wasn't all that great; however, I always found some I liked. The buffets on Radiance, Vision and Serenade of the Seas were much better IMO. Variety and quality will depend upon the ship and head chef. The food in the main dining is much better and you should use the Windjammer for a quick meal or casual dining. Again, it not bad, but not great either. It always depends on what you eat and what your food standard are. Food is very subjective so I'm sure everyone will have a different opinion.

I'm a real fan of the Windjammer's food. The food is pretty good overall. It isn't great or generally as good as the food served in the main dining room, but it's usually fresh and tasty. There's also a wide selection of food, which is always a good thing.

I thought the Windjammer on the Liberty was fair to good. Never found anything that I thought was really great, but also never found anything that I thought was poor either. Depending on when you go for breakfast, there will likely be a line for omelets. We never bothered so I can't say how long it takes. I was a little disappointed that there was no sushi for lunch in Jade. I asked one day and was told that it's only available for dinner. Never did the Windjammer for dinner.

IMO, if you are uncomfortable in the main dining room, you can go to the Windjammer for every meal. You will not be disappointed. I have eaten evening meals in the WJ and found the food to be very enjoyable and the setting to be very serene and quiet. The wait staff is very accomodating.

The food selection may have some of the same MDR offerings.

Try it.

The lunch salad station in the Freedom's WJ was a highlight for me...curries were also good. The pizza was definitely forgettable -the pizza in Sorrento's was better.

Breakfasts were quite good - loved the hash browns and order-an-egg station. Great selection and quality. Cantaloupe was very ripe and delicious. Didn't try the veggie stir fry, fried rice or miso soup with my breakfasts, however.

Some of the lunchtime soups in the WJ are very good!
