joannarocksyoursocks Posted May 18, 2010 #1 Share Posted May 18, 2010 I will be sailing on the Oasis this Summer, and taking along my Nikon DSLR camera which I'll take out with me on excursions etc. I was just wondering if anyone had ever experienced any negative reactions to the extreme heat and humidity with their cameras, and any ways in which to combat this. Thank you (:
Hobiecat01 Posted May 18, 2010 #2 Share Posted May 18, 2010 We have experienced a few issues with our cameras and binoculars with the heat and humidity differential between the nice AC on the ship and the hot, humid Caribbean air. Frankly, I usually place my binoculars in a bag hanging on a deck chair on my balcony all week. That way they stay aclimated to the humidity for those quick runs out on the balcony to see the ship s passing and the sights of a port. My video and other cameras... I do get quite a bit of lens fogging, but nothing to date in regards to anything doing damage (Thank goodness!!). Here's a link to a site with several tips for cameras in high-humidity areas: http://www.jmg-galleries.com/blog/2009/04/29/10-tips-when-using-dslrs-in-high-humidity/ I have used some of their tips, the best being pick a lens to use and change the lens before you go outside. Sure the outside of the lens will fog, but any extereme temperature change may be tempered inside the body of the camera, where humidity and fogging would do the most damage. Carry a lot of lens cloths (good ones) is another good tip. This has plagued many a photographer in hot, humid climates, including me but luckily I have not had any damage so far. Good Luck and just try to be careful. ---------------------------- Sea ya! sportsphotos Posted May 18, 2010 #4 Share Posted May 18, 2010 You will be fine. I have had the same fogging issues there is nothing you can do about it other than plan ahead, from cool to warm it will always happen. Its not like it is saltwater or anything. I always have taken my cameras with me, Nikon as well and never had a issue:o
joannarocksyoursocks Posted May 18, 2010 Author #5 Share Posted May 18, 2010 Thank you so much for the advice, that site was really helpful. I did try asking the man selling cameras in John Lewis department store but he obviously had no idea what he was talking about as he told me to keep it in a bag with an ice pack which would obviously make it much worse taking it out and going from ice cold to Caribbean heat. So I'll get myself some Silica packets and some lense cloths and cross my fingers (:
gnparend Posted May 19, 2010 #6 Share Posted May 19, 2010 If your camera is sitting in the cabin for any length of time the minute you hit the deck, let alone go on shore, there are fod issues. The Caribbean is more humid and the hot vs cold will fog the lense even with a lense cover. I just wiped it off, maybe a few times util the lense temp was warmer and no problems.
