ddgleason Posted June 4, 2010 #1 Share Posted June 4, 2010 So, nothing good on TV, I stumbled across NatGeo and World's Toughest Fixes was on. They were documenting a ship in drydock. It wasn't an RCI ship (Princess, I believe), but it was so interesting watching them tear pretty much the whole ship apart and rebuild it in only 2 weeks. I had no idea what all went on when a ship went into drydock! Wow!!!

I had no idea what all went on when a ship went into drydock! Wow!!! Saw most of program - lots of work done in two weeks drydock. Ship was Princess line "Sea Princess" - older ship (few balcony cabins, pre-azipod propellers). Dry dock work done in San Francisco.
sparky-elpaso Posted June 4, 2010 #5 Share Posted June 4, 2010 We watched it - very interesting. They had to take one of the 60 foot long drive shafts out so they could look for a broken pipe that was leaking - 6 inches at a time. It took them 8 hours to take it out and another 8 hours to put it back.
Land Based Posted June 5, 2010 #6 Share Posted June 5, 2010 I was planning on watching the show, but got busy and forgot. I am trying to find out when it will air again. I actually work for the company (another division and location) which did the work.
JAMESCC Posted June 5, 2010 #7 Share Posted June 5, 2010 I saw it and it was very interesting. The stabalizer fin being really damaged surprised me. The big end peice had to be replaced. They were speculating that it must of hit something hard. If that is the case what did it hit? Was anything reported? I am surprised Princess allowed that to be filmed and talked about the way it was. By the way I am SO mad I missed Oasis on "Mighty Ships". I can't find when it will be played. Anyone know? Discovery right? Thanks JC

bionicman97 Posted June 5, 2010 #9 Share Posted June 5, 2010 When we were on the Liberty last year, on one of the TV channels they were showing the dry docking of one of the RCI ships (I think it was Sovereign). It was interesting. I hope they continue to show these on the ships TV.

cruzincurt Posted June 5, 2010 #12 Share Posted June 5, 2010 It was a good example of why the newer ships now have electric motor driven azipods, no fixed propellers and rudders, and no longer need tug boats.

CruiseLover15 Posted June 5, 2010 #14 Share Posted June 5, 2010 It was a little boring for us non-engineering types :o, but seeing the parts of the finished product was good.
