Punjab Posted June 14, 2010 #1 Share Posted June 14, 2010 Do they serve Lox (Smoked Salmon) and Bagels on the breakfast buffet?
JerseyshoreBruce Posted June 14, 2010 #2 Share Posted June 14, 2010 Not the last time i cruised....only at the deli at lunch but you can order it for room service in the morning!
Froufie Posted June 14, 2010 #3 Share Posted June 14, 2010 Okay - as the 'unofficial' Carnival smoked salmon expert - here is the list: 1) Room service menu (you can order more than 1 'plate' - get more than one cream cheese thingie cuz they are skimpy and won't cover the whole bagel) 2) The deli - yes - lots of smoked salmon there (along with bagels, etc) so you can load up 3) Tea time - look for the server bearing the little plate of smoked salmon sandwiches - nice afternoon snack!:D 4) Befiriend a 'platinum' cruiser - at some point during the week they have a tray of canapes delivered to their cabin - half of which are smoked salmon - make sure they are aware of your 'predlilection' for the salmon - smile pretty and offer to take it off their hands if they like!:D (of course it helps if they are not big smoked salmon fans!) 5) On a couple of nights at dinner they will have appetizers which include smoked salmon - not the most generous serving - and sometimes some 'weird' additions to the plate, but a nice way to start the meal. As for the breakfast buffet - no the lox is not there HOWEVER I have heard someone say they asked for it and one of the servers went 'in the back' and got them some - so it doesn't hurt to ask and see what happens! Hope that helps!
sharecruises Posted June 14, 2010 #4 Share Posted June 14, 2010 6 ) Lox and lovely toasted bagel/cream cheese with capers, onions tomatoes is always available in the "sit down" dining room :) yum
Maple_Girl Posted June 14, 2010 #5 Share Posted June 14, 2010 I believe you can also order it for breakfast in the MDR. Froufie, as the lox specialist, can you confirm?
Rosefloater Posted June 14, 2010 #6 Share Posted June 14, 2010 Lox, bagel and cream cheese is always available in the MDR at breakfast. Much better there than in the deli IMO.
golfadj Posted June 14, 2010 #7 Share Posted June 14, 2010 But if only they could serve a good bagel us bagel lovers would be in seventh heaven.
Froufie Posted June 14, 2010 #8 Share Posted June 14, 2010 I believe you can also order it for breakfast in the MDR. Froufie, as the lox specialist, can you confirm? Yes I am happy to confirm that this is indeed TRUE! (altho the bagels come on a separate plate and altho toasted are not that 'warm' - this may also be the case for room service!!!). Froufie Posted June 14, 2010 #9 Share Posted June 14, 2010 But if only they could serve a good bagel us bagel lovers would be in seventh heaven. You said it!!! What's with this 'round bread with a hole in it' they call a bagel? I come from MONTREAL - where my father used to own the BAGEL KING BAKERY - so yes I am a BAGEL SNOB (and proud of it). So on the cruise - well I just grin and bear it - but it would taste so much better on the 'real thing'! :D:D;)
Tbay-eh Posted June 14, 2010 #10 Share Posted June 14, 2010 It is actually very good on the ship but like others say, the bagels are not the greatest. I make gravlox (lox) every year before Christmas - it is so simple but excellent. We have ordered smoked salmon omelets and the cook has gone in the back and gotten it but it is not offered as an option.

Other than some spices is there a difference? The store buys it and the employees have no idea what they are selling.

Gravlax (pronouned grav-lox) is cured with salt, sugar, black pepper, dill and other spices as to taste.....No smoking involved....You can even use a little good potato vodka while curing if you like. ;) Side note...Had a really great bagel shop down the street that was owned by a very nice Jewish family. They made bagels the way they are supposed to be. The St. Pete bagel and that national chain moved in. They are now out of business. They did actually make Gravlax from scratch. Most of the time you can't get this unless you are in a Scandinavian country or in a community with a large population of Scadinavians.... I really love the taste... Punjab Posted June 14, 2010 Author #14 Share Posted June 14, 2010 Sad and surprised to learn that Carnival does not serve Lox on the buffet. I know Celeberty and NCL do. Guess I will have to switch cruise lines.;););)

Don't you just hate bagel smugglers? Does it affect their bottom line? Will we all have to pay higher prices in the future?

Punjab Posted June 14, 2010 Author #19 Share Posted June 14, 2010 For me it's a real sesame water bagle, Phily cream cheese, Nova lox, Beefsteak tomato topped with a slice of Vidalia Onion (in that order).

Does it affect their bottom line? Will we all have to pay higher prices in the future? Hmmm - now there's an idea? We've all heard of the 'rum runners' being used to sneak alcohol on board? I think I shall have to develop 'bagel bras' - looks like a bra - feels like a bra - but what's that inside? no not just padding - but BAGELS - delicious, REAL wood burning oven baked bagels! (hope they don't squeeze them too hard! ha ha ha :D:D:D). Just realized I forgot about the guys - how about 'bagel boxers'? (ha ha ha sometimes I just crack myself up:D)

Can't help you there, but here's how Food Network's Ina Garten makes its cousin, gravlax (I'd skip the mustard sauce...): Gravlax
evandbob Posted July 12, 2011 #25 Share Posted July 12, 2011 One of the reasons I sometimes go to the MDR for breakfast is to get the smoked salmon, now if CCL had New York bagels, I might go more often.
