pavteam Posted June 19, 2010 #1 Share Posted June 19, 2010 We had heard that we should do one of the White Pass rail tours. We are doing a land tour through Princess before sailing and will be taking the rail to Denali. Will the White pass tour be similar or totally different? Thanks, Valerie

Thanks, Valerie Totally, completely different! The White Pass train is a narrow gauge train with historical cars. The trains used on the land portion are modern, double deck cars on standard tracks. wwinfl91 Posted June 19, 2010 #3 Share Posted June 19, 2010 If you enjoy history and scenic views do the White Pass rail. You can do it a variety of ways but definitely do it. Have a great next cruise.
MercedMike Posted June 20, 2010 #4 Share Posted June 20, 2010 The land tour train portions are in large domed cars on thoroughly modern trains. Check out our trip report and pictures at http://www.bully4.us/ct3.html The White Pass RR is an antique train and well worth while for old train buffs. The cars are older (or reproductions) and smaller. You can step out on the platform between cars for photos. Check out our trip report and pictures at http://www.bully4.us/ct2.html Frankly, I am NOT an old train buff. What we enjoy much more for the White Pass is to rent a car from Avis and drive over the pass ourselves. Although the train track has a few extremely spectacular views, honestly most of the time you are looking at a rock wall on one side and spruce/willow forest on the other. The guide will warn you when a good view is coming up! The auto road, on the opposite side of the pass, is IMAO much more open and gives better general good scenery most of the way.
