rjg41 Posted June 8, 2004 #3 Share Posted June 8, 2004 Make sure you book the top swim. I think they call it the Royal Swim now. Highly suggest you purchase one of the disposable underwater cameras so you can take you own pictures. You don't go underwater but the camera will get wet. Their pictures are expensive. If you have a waterproof video camera bring that also. They sell a video of your swim but also expensive. njreindeer Posted June 8, 2004 #4 Share Posted June 8, 2004 Hi all -- DH wants to swim with the dolphins (I don't swim...) and we were going to book the Cozumel excursion offered by RCCL (Dolphin Swim & Snorkel Adventure - the $136 one) but are wondering if the Dolphin Discovery one is better? I checked their website, and maybe I wasn't looking at the right choice, but it looked like their excursion only lasted less than an hour, and RC's was much longer. Is Dolphin Discovery still the best one? We'd like to book soon... Thanks very much! allamricn Posted June 8, 2004 Author #5 Share Posted June 8, 2004 I read a couple threads about the Royal Swim and it seemed to be the best, and it wasn't too much cheaper, but I just wanted to see if there was an advantage to booking the dolphin through someone other than RCI. DMorris Posted June 8, 2004 #7 Share Posted June 8, 2004 From my understanding the excursion offered by the cruise line is not the actual swim. Not sure if I am right on that, but the royal swim with Dolphin Discovery is well worth it. You actually get in the water to do tricks and play with the dolphins. KStevens79 Posted June 8, 2004 #8 Share Posted June 8, 2004 We did the Royal Swim four years and had a blast. I booked it myself and then took a taxi to Chankanaab Park. I don't remember the cost of the taxi and there is a charge to get into the park. We did the 10AM swim (double check your times, if I remember correctly there is a time difference between the ship and Cozumel) and still had time to do snorkeling in the afternoon. The Royal Swim booked directly through Dolphin Discovery is a maximum of 6 people to two dolphins. You actually get in the water and swim with the dolphins. The one booked through the ship is about 30 people to maybe four dolphins. If I remember correctly from what I saw these people stood on a platform in the water and got to touch the dolphins. Book your own, it's well worth the money. We also bought the video, it was $50 back then, but well worth it. My kids still watch it and show it to there friends. It's definitely the opportunity of a lifetime. Hope this helps! paulam Posted June 8, 2004 #9 Share Posted June 8, 2004 The absolutely best thing to do is book the dolphin swim on your own directly with Dolphin Discovery and enjoy your day at Chankanaab Park. If you book through the cruise ship they will take you over to the park and take you back to the ship. You will still do the swim with Dolphin Discovery -- you then have to leave when your excursion leaves rather than being able to stay and enjoy the park on your own. The days we spent at Chankanaab (we've been there twice) will always be my favorite place to go. I have done the full dolphin swim once and the dolphin encounter with my 8 year old daughter once as well. It is a wonderful experience and I highly recommend it! Booking with Dolphin Discovery is very simple and getting to the park on your own is just as easy. You will not regret it.
