Lanyards?

I think I will wear a lanyard, fannypack, backpack, sandals with white socks, plaid shorts with a paisley print blouse, and wide brim sun-visor...What do ya' think?...am I really to sail, now? :p Enough said...! Let's just enjoy the adventure and forget about what other people think is the proper attire for sailing. I have 97 days to go until "Bon Voyage."

So, recently some friends and I were having a conversation about this very topic. I also recently saw a you tube post giving tips for a cruise saying a Lanyard was a "MUST HAVE" I think that Lanyards are appropriate by the pool, and for walking around the ship in the daytime, and anytime for children under about 16. HOWEVER, when dressed in formal wear and even business casual wear at dinner, IT LOOKS RIDICULOUS. Ladies buy a small purse, Men use your pockets. If you think a plastic card on a string is appropriate with an evening gown or formal wear, then I hope your not on the same cruise I am on. Be an adult. Do you wear your Mastercard around your neck when you go to a fine restaurant???? Not trying to pick on anyone, but I think the Lanyards are out of hand. I was on Regal Princess for the new years sailing this year and there we were New Years Eve, formal night, ladies in gowns that surely cost a thousand dollars and wearing a plastic card on a string around their neck. I would think it was just common sense that this is not appropriate attire. Again... daytime... if its convenient, I get it, children, I get it... Adults at night... give me a break. Have some class.

I am another lanyard fan. I do not carry a purse around the ship during the day. I don't feel safe carrying my ship card in my pocket. I would loose it for sure. I would be putting my hands in my pockets, frequently, checking to see it it were still there and would certainly loose it. During the evening hours, I will carry a small bag. I will put ship card/lanyard there, or have DH carry it for me. I do not wear my ship card/lanyard when we are in port, but keep it in my purse. ship card is easier to find in my purse if it is attached to a lanyard when commenting back on the ship. I usually buy a lanyard from the ship store with the cruise line name on it.

I'm a huge fan of wearing a lanyard. Carrying a purse around is too cumbersome, and I'm always wary about theft. I bought this one: Click me!

I tucked my sail card underneath my shirt/dress and it just looks like a necklace on top. Plus it's magnetic, which makes it easy to put on and take off. Very sturdy, too. Definitely worth spending a little more on it than a $3 one if you don't want to look too tourist-y.

Judgmental much? Maybe the women you saw had a good reason to do this rather than carry a purse. And yes, I will wear my card in a lanyard sleeve while about the ship even though for formal nights it does go into a dressy purse and when getting off the ship to go into port, as soon as my card is scanned, it goes into my purse.

It is a handy item (and it makes me focus on taking my card with me before leaving the cabin). My daughter just started college and the first thing each student was given when starting the check in process at the housing office was a lanyard along with an attached wallet for carrying their ID card and mailbox key. She actually had bought a lanyard the week before we left and she switched out the school one for her new one.

it's amusing how petty some people are and that they feel THEY are the say all on fine fashion. If it doesn't have ANYTHING to do with you then WHO cares? just do what you want to do and the others with theirs noses in the air can get bent. Give them something else to gossip about in another CC thread.

Man I need to find me some kind of over the top lanyard to wear next month.

My 02

Michael

I've been given them by TAs and sometimes by the shp (usually at the casino) tyhe only way use them is through a belt loop and then in my pocket. Hate Hate Hate having them around my neck. But then I have arthritis in the neck.

Feeling a bit intimidated by the fashion police, I abandoned the lanyard for one day. Never been happier to get up the next morning and proudly put my lanyard and insecurities behind me. I love having the convenience of the lanyard. No scrounging around to find what pocket...no wait, this doesn't have a pocket, must be in the bag, but which zipper or pouch...wait, did I leave it at the bar? gift shop? I haven't been without my lanyard on a cruise since. Go ahead and pretend that other methods are just as easy. I'll be the one not caring if you don't want to hang with me because I wear a lanyard.:D

Me also! Plus it is so much easier with kids because I can do a quick scan to make sure everybody has thiers.

To the OP No they don't hand them out, but they do have them in the ships store and they make a great souvenier for about $6. They are a lot cheaper in the ports (about $2 to $4) and I pick one up at each new port I go to. They are much more fun to wear at work then the plain ones handed out by my employeer. That way everybody gets to see where I was last :D

I think instead of just a jewelry making class the ships need to add a "blinged-out lanyard" class....apparently there's a need! ;)

If you haven't used this yet - I just wanted to warn you to keep the magnetic clasp AWAY from your card when you take it off. My daughter had one and after we replaced her card for the 3rd time we figured out why - she would just lay it down on a surface and the magnet kept getting too close to the card. Hang it instead, or lay it down carefully.

I have obviously offended some folks and that was not my intention. I was trying to make a somewhat joking attempt to express my own personal opinion that lanyards and plastic cruise cards don't go with formal wear on adults. I guess I sounded like a smarty pants. At any rate, it is my opinion. But I assure you, I want everyone to enjoy their cruise every bit as much as I have enjoyed each one of mine. If that means a lanyard for you, wear it loud and proud, I won't point, but reserve the right to rant my opinion on cruise critic about it later on! Happy Cruising guys. :). If you happen to be on the Ruby Princess Oct 18, feel free to make fun of me for losing my cruise card for not having that lanyard.

Greatfully, I found another whole large thread of people who also share my distaste for lanyards! I feel less ostracisized now! Lol. Maybe it's because I have to wear one every day at my job that I don't like them. Who knows. But now I have been called a snob, the fashion police, and some other choice things. And again I reiterate the only point I was trying to make is that they do not go with evening wear..... and I think the reason everyone gets in such a wad is because maybe just maybe, i am right and that you do feel a little silly wearing a string around your neck with a plastic room key credit card on it? But again.... If it makes you happy do it. I, however, will not waiver in my opinion that it looks ridiiculous with evening wear! :) :) :) :). Happy Cruising guys!

I don't wear the lanyard with evening wear. I use an evening purse.

you need your drivers license when you get off the ship

That's news to me. I've need just the ship's card, sometimes the passport, and once a stamped color copy of my passport. Where did they want to see your driver's license? Maybe you rented a car in the port?

Do they hand them out with the card for free when you start your cruise?

How much are they if they aren't free and I wonder if I should just buy some cheap at home first.

TIA!!

The cruise lines do not generally give out free lanyards. You can often buy one from a shop on board. I have purchased lanyards from Ebay along with plastic the credit card holders. I use these for work as well as when cruising. It is not necessary to wear a lanyard when cruising but you might find one useful occasionally I sometimes do. It is sometimes considered a security risk ashore; as it indicates you are off a cruise ship.

Surprisingly when you get onboard you will not find this a big political issue.

Regards John

I totally agree with John. I never wear my card, and it's not a big deal. If you lose it, it's really easy to get a new one from guest services. My kids like the lanyards so I'll bring a cheapy one from home

I love my lanyard. I have to wear one at work and I bought some that look like jewelry. I guess I should rethink it since I will be judged as stupid looking for wearing one. :p

I never wear it off ship; I have a purse but it's awesome not to have to carry a purse on the ship.

As a woman hardly any of my clothes have a pocket. When I'm using a small purse I would pop my card in there. But I don't always use one. We don't use cash or credit cards while on board so only use purse to carry my phone/ camera.

When I don't have my purse I use the lanyard. I'm not a newbie. And I always see loads of people wearing them who also are not newbies (because I talk to them)

I also don't think people look stupid who wear them, why would I! I'm enjoying myself too much to bother about what my fellow passengers are wearing. And I certainly don't care if strangers think I look stupid because of a lanyard!

If you don't have pockets a lanyard is a reasonable alternative.

Only I wouldn't wear it around port as it advertises the fact your a tourist and might be easy pickings for pickpockets.

As regards to Drivers licence, you are told to bring some form of photo ID with you as you need it to get to docking area of ship/port. Sometimes security will ask for it sometimes not. I've seen it happen, where a group returned to dock only one had their I'D with them so they made the guy with the ID go to the ship and get everyone ID.

In the Caribbean it can be your driving licence or passport.
