punkin35 Posted September 29, 2010 #1 Share Posted September 29, 2010 We are going on the Carnival Dream to Isla Roatan, Belize, Cozumel, and Costa Maya. Does anyone know of a great dolphin encounter at any of these ports? Would love to take the kids to do this on this cruise! MM
griffy116 Posted September 29, 2010 #2 Share Posted September 29, 2010 Our TA recommended Discovery Cove in Cozumel. He had just been there. I pulled it up on their website and it looks great. We did the Blue Lagoon from Nassau so we are looking forward to the Discovery Cove in Cozumel. You can get a look at all of the Discovery Cove locations and the prices, which vary from location to location somewhat.
Bonnie J. Posted September 30, 2010 #3 Share Posted September 30, 2010 Chankanaub, the national park in Cozumel, has a swim with the dolphins. We have only watched it and it does look great. You'll find Chankanaub on line and can find out all about it there. Oh, the dolphin encounter is a waist of $$$. You stand on a waist deep platform and a dolphin swims by so you can pet him, they spray you with water and do a trick or two right in front of you. Watch this before you decide and pay to do it! We were to do our Swim with the Dolphins at Chankanaub Park (Dolphin Discovery) in Cozumel (great park and land area by the way), but our ship had to change ports so we had to reschedule at another Dolphin Discovery. Ended up doing this in Grand Cayman. We had a fabulous time. We did the Royal Swim and had plenty of time to learn about the dolphins and interact with them. It truly was a learning experience. We booked straight through the Dolphin Discovery instead of a ship excursion and got ourselves there and back. Saved a ton of money and had more private time with them. The group was small and more interaction. Do have to wear a lifejacket and most of the time standing on a "ledge" in the water that is at least waist high. Then you will need to go out into the deeper water, but with a worker. Of course, you will always get that ethical debate about swimming with the dolphins, so do what you think is best for you. dnj1 Posted September 30, 2010 #5 Share Posted September 30, 2010 We did the Encounter at Chankanaab and loved it. Some people prefer the encounter instead of the swim. We did not think it was a waste of money. For 1 reason, we cant swim. So for us it was a great choice and a great way to interact with the dolphins. I was able to take my DD who was 3 at the time and she loved it. The park itself is great and they even have a swimming pool.
copi2boys Posted October 5, 2010 #6 Share Posted October 5, 2010 We did the dolphin swim at Chankanaub - it was the highlight of the cruise for a ggroup of 3 couples. My husband is not a swimmer and did very well. They do a dolphin kiss, a pectoral swim, a push in a kickboard, hug the dolpn, then we got to go in the water with the manatees. Worth the money, we were in the water for at least 3 hours if not more. The whole park is enjoyable, pool, beach, bar...
roatanvortex Posted October 7, 2010 #7 Share Posted October 7, 2010 On Roatan the Dolphin Encounter at Anthony Key Resort is fantastic! I did that one with my mom on my first visit to Roatan. Very natural setting (not an aquarium.) Now that I live on Roatan I take my grandkids there when they come to visit.
