It looks lovely but will be totally useless.

If they are going to spend all that money they need to be able to berth at least 2 mega sized cruise ships at the same time.

Easier to do it now , than extend it later.

If they do that , they will get every ship calling through on its World Cruise, plus the local ships.

They could even offer cruise ships a special deal to overnight there and take all the business away from Cairns.

How long does it take to drive from Townsville to Cairns?

Hmm - this looks very interesting.

One of the big problems this country has is a lack of natural harbours in areas that have been developed over the past 200 years. For example there is no natural harbour in cairns and I can't see anybody ever building a megadollar cruiseline terminal far out of Cairns( say at Yorkeys Knob) , But Townsville is a different kettle of fish - plenty of water to get into the area and plenty of water along the Townsville shoreline. You can see here in Google Maps where the plan would be - on the southern side of the Strand (which is a very pleasant place these days)

Personally, I have felt for some time that Townsville is coming of age ( mainly because of the Strand development) and could give Cairns a very good run for their money!!

Very interesting indeed Barry,

One thing I have learned on my brief existence on this planet...

is that if you put in the infrastructure..

Guess What????

People come along and use it.

Go for it Townsville.

You are on to a winner....

In terms of the cruising and tourist market.

Lucky Townsville... looks great!! We need a lot more investment to accomodate the cruise industry but not much is happening.

Here in Newcastle our new terminal comprises of a tent smartly located between a wheat loader and a coal loader.

Anyone need a politican or two??, we can spare them!

Townsville is a great place the beachfront is much better than Cairns. Unfortunatley Thied's download from port web site is something that has not got off the ground, this proposal extendes berth 10 which is the short wharf on the far left of the picture however with a passenger terminal it will still be a good thing, only 5 minutes from the CBD.
