film in luggage

Recommended Posts

The waterproof cameras are 800 asa. I would recommend you bring it in your carryon. If your regular 35mm is less than 800, you should be ok. If you are concerned, you can buy those special envelopes to put film in to prevent damage from xrays at places like Wallgreens.

NO! The more powerful xray machines they use for checked luggage will ruin your film. It will be fine in carry on luggage as those machines are far less powerful. We use 800 speed film exclusively and haven't had a problem with exposure from the airport screening machines for carry on luggage or the machines that Royal Caribbean uses when you get on or off the ship.

To be complerely safe, just develope your film as soon as you've used the roll. Onboard developement might be more expensive but you get to see you're pictures now and you don't have to worry that it might get ruined by any of the machines.

Don't do it. The airports have signs that say never to put film in your checked luggage.

Here's the govt TSA website on film and air travel: http://www.tsa.gov/public/interapp/editorial/editorial_1248.xml

I've read on this board of devastated people that had all their cruise pictures ruined because they put their film in their checked baggage.

It's different if you carry it on, because if they don't like the look of the film bag or can't see enough inside it, they will hand search the bag in your presence.

no way. as i'm sure we've all seen many times. things can happen to your checked luggage. your luggage could be lost, someone could rip open your luggage and steal your valuables, your luggage could rip/burst, and your expensive camera would be lost forever...

at least if you carry it on, if you lose it, its your own fault!

jstducky!

In what way does an xray damage the film?

I've had some pictures that were grainy and strange after a trip to California and after my first cruise. I assumed it was because my film was a year, possibly two years, old as I had bought about 40 rolls for a trip to Ireland and never went thru it all. But I think I stopped making sure the film was in my carryon after we were told by the xray folks to just send our film thru the carryon xray. I never realized there were 2 different strengths of the xrays... Hmmm... You learn something new every day!

The X-rays expose undeveloped film.

Chances are that your film was old or had been exposed to high temperatures (left in a car?). We travel a lot and to date, we've had no problem with any of the X-ray machines for carry on luggage at the airport or the cruise ships. Repeated exposure to such devices could cause problems such as what you've experienced.

We use 800 speed film exclusively. 800 speed or less should be safe. At first, we were asking them to hand check the film just in case. A year or so ago we started getting a LOT of flack from the screeners so we just quit asking. So far so good. No problems with the film.

I admit to being clueless...

If you use exposed film or develop exposed film, how do the pictures turn out? Just black? No pictures? Or just very bad quality pictures?

IF they are completely exposed, it would be like taking your film out of it's container and holding it up to the sunlight before putting it into your camera.

With weaker machines it can streak your film or make it appear grainy.

Lots of accurate advice here: Never put film of any sort in checked luggage. CTX machines WILL damage film. Not might damage, WILL damage film. Lead-lined film bags will usually prompt a hand search of the bag and the surrounding area.

Global: Screeners do not "crank up the radiation" to see through a film bag. If we (I being a screener) could crank up the radiation, I'd microwave my food in there. But alas, we are deprived of that luxury. If we can't see through or into a film bag because of its density, a hand search MUST be done, whether it's in checked or carry-on luggage. Guns and knives have been hidden in and under these lead-lined film bags. Not a good thing. And if you piss me off, I'll send beams of computed tomography energy directly through your film. That's what damages film in checked baggage, not the x-rays themselves.

Please heed this advice. I do this for a living. Don't risk getting your film ruined. And don't forget Polaroid film, film in disposable and underwater cameras, and Advantix (APS) film negatives still in the roll. Happy cruising!

It's what I'd heard repeatedly long before the US started X-raying checked baggage. I'm thinking of the rest of the world where X-raying checked baggage has been standard practice for many years, but there hasn't ever been a regular system for hand searching checked baggage. Travel advice has always been, and remains, to securely lock all checked baggage.

I'd always understood that hand searches were usually unnecessary for checked baggage because the X-ray machines used for them could just be turned up until any offending dense object was properly imaged.

I have to say - I do find it funny to see whether a particular screener doesn't like the look of my film bag in my carry on and asks for a hand search. I have about a 25% hand search rate because of it (other than in Hong Kong, which for some reason has a unique local fetish about visually checking aerosols - so 100% hand searches there). The lottery aspect of that always makes me laugh.

This site will show you what your photos will look like if exposed to x-rays and some advice about film and x-ray.
