windsor26 Posted January 2, 2011 #2 Share Posted January 2, 2011 Perhaps we should ALL expect the unexpected in the next few years At the moment we in Australia have a mixture of terrible flood s - water up and over the rooftops to an area the size of NSW (in Queensland) - drought in parts of WA freezing cold in northern NSW last week and then 4 sweltering days immediately afterwards? At least a lot of the country will miss the worry of bush fires this year thank God.
LARGIN Posted January 2, 2011 #3 Share Posted January 2, 2011 No biggie as it snows there every year..
cattolica Posted January 3, 2011 #4 Share Posted January 3, 2011 Actually Santa Clarita is only at an elevation of 1200 feet so snow there is VERY rare. It snows north of them in the area called the "Grapevine" (I-5 Freeway). Snow levels here in So. Cal. only make it as low as an elevation of 2000 feet. No biggie as it snows there every year..
mac3835 Posted January 3, 2011 #5 Share Posted January 3, 2011 Having actually lived in Santa Clarita, I second Cattolica's post. Snow is quite a rare event there; it is usually sunny and warm southern California weather!
freetocruise Posted January 3, 2011 #6 Share Posted January 3, 2011 I have lived in Santa Clarita for over 25 years (before it was Santa Clarita) and this is the third time we've had snow since I've lived here and the last time was in 1989 or 1990 before Princess moved its HQ here. There is often snow on the grapevine but it doesn't affect the Santa Clarita area. The snow is sticking on the ground and it is still coming down. It's a rare treat. travelntreats Posted January 3, 2011 #7 Share Posted January 3, 2011 It's rare in Georgia too ! Do we get a prize for our snow flurries on Christmas day 2010 that have not occurred in the Atlanta area on that day since the late 1800's ???
linnealee Posted January 3, 2011 #8 Share Posted January 3, 2011 Wow, that's nuts! I work in Valencia & live north of it, but I'm in Florida right now missing it. Fine with me as I don't like the cold.
ASeaPrincess1 Posted January 3, 2011 #9 Share Posted January 3, 2011 Yep, it's snowing pretty good up here in the high desert...........
Putterdude Posted January 3, 2011 #10 Share Posted January 3, 2011 Then when they were done with their snow they sent the clouds over to us here in the desert. In fact I turn to one of my golf partners this afternoon and said if I didn't know where I was I would think it is going to snow.

Rare Woobstr112G Posted January 3, 2011 #12 Share Posted January 3, 2011 I work about 200-300 yards from Princess HQ. Was just starting to snow when I left work yesterday. Today I didn't even think about trying to go to work. With CHP excorts, it would have taken me 3-4 hours just to get to the Sand Canyon off ramp..... Working 2 Cruise Posted January 3, 2011 #13 Share Posted January 3, 2011 No biggie as it snows there every year.. Sorry Largin, but you are wrong! ;) This is the first time I have ever witnessed snow since I moved there 12 years ago! It was shocking! This is supposed to be Southern California, with lots of sunshine! I love the snow, so that was not only very memorable, but enjoyable as well... You will find many articles referencing snow there going back various years including last year.. I admit that this year the snowfall was way more than usual.. laraja Posted January 3, 2011 #16 Share Posted January 3, 2011 Did they shut this area of the state down completely? I understand lots of folks can't get to work. Santa Clarita is at the southern end of the Tejon Pass (Interstate 5, commonly called The Grapevine) elev. 4,160 ft. It's usually the most direct route from Central CA to So. CA. When really cold storms come through there's snow at the summit and for safety's sake the CHP will escort traffic though or shut it down entirely. The average Californian doesn't carry chains and salting roads in CA is illegal.

The average Californian doesn't carry chains and salting roads in CA is illegal. They also close the 14 freeway which is the major artery for Antelope Valley commuters who work in Santa Clarita and points south. There are the canyon roads and Sierra Highway but those are sometimes closed or very dangerous at best. In addition, when the highway patrol opens the freeway they often do escorts which about doubles the commute time. Bob
wizard-of-roz Posted January 3, 2011 #18 Share Posted January 3, 2011 Geeezzz, you'd think we were "snowed-in", here in L.A. One of the gals who works in our office lives near the Princess offices and, although, the snow was pretty good and there was some escorting done in the past several days.....the road [Hwy. 14] which is the main artery leading to L.A. and the San Fernando Valley, was wide open this am [with some lovely patches of the white stuff on the side roads.] You can always count on the sunshine to come out and right now it's sunny with no chance of rain for a few days. The roads were clear this morning leading from Santa Clarita to downtown L.A. This stretch of road can be "chancey"....if there's an accident, you can find yourself living on Highway 14. sprinkles Posted January 4, 2011 #25 Share Posted January 4, 2011 OK - I Live in Santa Clarita too. I've waited 17 years to see it snow at my house - I knew that it was "possible". If it helps the argument at all, yes, the fringes (the hillsides) have gotten snow often (yes even last year). The Santa Clarita Valley Floor (where Princess HQ is) and basically the center of the city, where homes are - hadn't seen snow since 1989 (and back then that was considered bizarre). So, newsworthy??? To DH and I, it was a big deal - ton's of pictures - LOL. If you don't live here, I can understand not seeing what the fuss is about. Happy cruising everyone.
