Donray Posted April 20, 2011 #152 Share Posted April 20, 2011 Inexpensive hotels in Los Angeles are not where you want to go. I'm sure a few others will chime in here as well and advise the same. Hope this helps!!:) Unless you want durgs, woman, or like gun shots.

Sunny AZ Girl Posted May 8, 2011 #162 Share Posted May 8, 2011 I just found this thread. We have sailed out of San Pedro several times and it is great to learn a little more information about the area. Thank you for this service.:) We are planning a cruise in May 2012 out of San Pedro once again. We will be staying at the Doubletree as in the past. We plan to leave our car at the hotel, take the Pacific Coastal Cruise to Vancouver and then return to LA on Amtrak's Coast Starlight. The train is scheduled to arrive in LA at Union Station around 9 PM. From there we plan to return to the Doubletree for one more night before driving home to the Phoenix area. There are so far about 14 of us & more are expected to join us. My question - We are not sure of the best way to get from the train station to the Doubletree. Amtrak provides a bus that would drop us off in downtown San Pedro for a very inexpensive price, but it would take about 1 1/2 hours and we would still have to get to the hotel from there. Is there a shuttle service that would take a large group for a reasonable price to the Doubletree that you know of? If we book through Amtrak we have to do it when we reserve our tickets - in just a little over a month. Thank you for your help!:)
kenish Posted May 8, 2011 #163 Share Posted May 8, 2011 The other option is a shuttle van. For the size of your party you will need 2 or even 3 vans since I assume everyone has luggage. But it will probably be exclusive use, so there won't be stops enroute to drop off or pick up other passengers. I recommend calling Karmel Shuttle...or look at other shuttle services online. FYI, there have been increasing complaints about Primetime Shuttle. Compare the prices to the Amtrak bus....a shuttle will probably be higher cost per-person. Like almost everything else it will come down to how much your time and convenience is worth.

I am sure it will be a bit pricier, but time and convenience are worth quite a bit. We just want the price to be reasonable. Since the train gets in late - after a 7 night cruise, 2 nights in Vancouver and a 35 + hour train ride we will probably not want to worry about a long bus ride and having to schlepp our luggage off a bus, finding a taxi and going to the hotel. Wineaux Posted May 9, 2011 Author #165 Share Posted May 9, 2011 There is a company here in San Pedro called Airport Escort Service. They have 15 passenger vans and shuttle folks around. Give them a call and see if they can hook you up. (310) 547-0811. They are a 24 hour operation.

SNJCruisers Posted May 9, 2011 #167 Share Posted May 9, 2011 (edited) I am not sure about Airport Escort Service, but I have read good things about Karmel Shuttles. They offer point to point private van service. Since there are 14 of you, a 15 passenger van will not cut it because of luggage that will be involved. I do this for a living, I am a chauffeur based in Philadelphia. A 15 passenger van consists of two seats up front, 3 rows for three people and the back row will fit four people. Because of all of your luggage, you will need to get two vans. You can comfortably fit 10 people and all of their luggage in a 15 passenger van. My GF and I will be using Karmel's van service before our cruise in September on the Spirit. They will be picking us up at a LAX area hotel and take us to the San Pedro Port. They quoted me 43.00, less 10% for AAA....assuming that someone from your group has AAA, and if you tip the driver 20 bucks because of all of the luggage involved, it'll only be 7 bucks per person, about 98 total. This is of course assuming that the rate will be about the same, but I don't know why it wouldn't, unless the Amtrak station is that much further away from San Pedro as oppossed to LAX. hansolo Posted May 18, 2011 #170 Share Posted May 18, 2011 Regarding wine....The Von's at 13th & Gaffey has the typical selection of wines. San Pedro also has a wine shop....Off the Vine...it's walking distance from the CP and I'm sure the DT shuttle will take you there as well. Off the Vine has a more select choice and a great variety from different wine regions. And it has a tasting area......:D We went there on the Friday night before our cruise, they were very accomodating considering we showed up 15 minutes before close and stayed a little after closing. Thanks for the tips and the fun mothers day tasting. We later found out our friends from the cruise also were there earlier that evening.
Wineaux Posted May 27, 2011 Author #171 Share Posted May 27, 2011 It's summer time and very few cruises are going out right now but if you are one of those heading into San Pedro and have a question...fire away!!
CupKayke Posted May 28, 2011 #172 Share Posted May 28, 2011 According to the Catalina Chamber of Commerce Office there is a luggage storage area on the pier in Avalon. Catalina Baggage Delivery & Storage Services Street: Cabrillo Mole # 1 Avalon, ca 90704- Phone: (310) 510-0766 3 Ratings: http://web.userinstinct.com/6147272-catalina-baggage-delivery-storage-services.htm#review I am happy to report ~ in case anyone else is interested ~ I was finally able to get in touch with Catalina Baggage and they were WONDERFUL! They have storage space for anything - luggage, bikes, etc - on a first-come, first-gets-the-space basis for $4 for all day!! They are located directly off the Avalon pier and were very nice on the phone. I was also able to contact the Catalina Express and they ran their to/fro San Pedro route all the way until October 19, 2010 so she thinks they will be run AT LEAST that long this year ~ possibly longer with the Carnival moving the Spirit to the San Pedro in September. FYI in case anyone else is interested.

imacruizer Posted June 8, 2011 #174 Share Posted June 8, 2011 We are docking in San Pedro on a Sunday. We will not be disembarking but some passengers will disembark and others will embark in this port. We will continue our cruise leaving San Pedro at 4 PM. We would like to go to Long Beach and tour the Queen Mary. What would be the best way to do this (taxi?) and how long should we allow? Thanks for your offer to help!
