Scorpiorose Posted February 19, 2011 #1 Share Posted February 19, 2011 What would you do to see a bit of Venice if you had 1.5 day(s) to be there before and after a cruise?
pete_coach Posted February 20, 2011 #2 Share Posted February 20, 2011 Venice is the perfect "walkabout". There are no cars or vehicles in Venice so you have no choice but to walk. I would take a water bus (vaporetto) to see the canal and out to Murano for some glass blowing. I would get a tour of the Doge's Palace. The Doge was the elected leader of Vencie. The Palace was the seat of the rulers of Venice for over a thousand years. The "Secret" tour is very nice and gets you to places you can only go with a guide. Of course, a gondola ride is a must, it is so inexplicably Venice (in my opinion only). St Marks Church in Piazza San Marco is also a must see. The key is to bring walking shoes and just try to get lost in the place (you can't LOL). There is something uttery unique around every corner or down every canal or in every little piazza. riffatsea Posted February 20, 2011 #3 Share Posted February 20, 2011 I like the ride down the Grand Canal at night when the buildings are lit up. I also prefer San Marco Square towards sunset when the light makes the basilica look golden! The square is crowded with tourists during the day and quieter at night but the outdoor orchestras are playing and it is VERY romantic then! My 2 favorite places are not in San Marco Square but are the Frari church and the Scuola Grande di San Marco near each other and closer to the hotel you are considering. The scuola has Tintorettos life work(26years of painting) on the walls and ceiling like the Sistine Chapel but easier to see!! http://www.scuolagrandesanrocco.it/# http://www.sacred-destinations.com/italy/venice-santa-maria-gloriosa-dei-frari

Borrow rick Steve's guide from your library. He has suggested 1 day tours as well as primitive maps and decent guides to the buildings. While you are there, borrow City of falling Angels' The two books will double your enjoyment of venice.
KirkNC Posted February 20, 2011 #5 Share Posted February 20, 2011 Venice is easy to get around, the top 10 list includes: Doge's Palace St Mark's Square St Mark's Basilica Rialto Bridge Frari Church Accademia Guggenheim Grand Canal Scuola San Rocco Campanile (bell tower) And that does not even include just walking around and taking it all in. Rare TLCOhio Posted February 21, 2011 #13 Share Posted February 21, 2011 What would you do to see a bit of Venice if you had 1.5 day(s) to be there before and after a cruise? You have already gotten lots of great suggestions and ideas for wonderful and charming Venice. The "good news" in Venice is that it is fairly compact and you can see and do lots and lots in a fairly short period of time. A day and a half will allow lots of time for some of the best highlights there. Check out this posting that I did with many, many pictures on Venice: Loving It & Why??!! http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1278226&highlight=venice Also, here's a good resource, Venice Tourism Office: http://www.turismovenezia.it/venezia/eng/default.asp?lingua=en Below are a few of my visual suggestions on certain of the best options for Venice. THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio For lots of interesting details, great visuals, etc., from our July 1-16 Norway Coast/Fjords/Arctic Circle cruise experience from Copenhagen on the Silver Cloud, check out this posting. Don’t be shy and feel free to ask any questions of interest. This posting is now over 32,880 views. Appreciate those who have “tuned in”. http://www.boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1227923 Nothing says Venice better than Piazza San Marco, the "living room" of this great city. Unlike most cities in Europe, this square has people prevailing over the sounds of cars, trucks and motor scooters. The Piazza has it all, the Basilica of San Marco at its eastern end, the Campanile Tower, other historic buildings and the walkway to where Marco Polo boarded ships to discover China and the East. Plus, in the evenings, there are the "battle of the bands" with music playing and people enjoying this area without the middle of the day tourist mobs. Those large crowds have departed, making this historic city so much more enjoyable.: This picture shows San Giorgio Maggiore, a 16th century Benedictine church built between 1566 and 1610. The gondolas are docked in the foreground in the main part of Venice. There were eight to ten thousand gondolas during the 17th and 18th century with only about four hundred in active service today.: The Rialto Bridge is the oldest of four bridges across the Grand Canal in Venice. It was built 1588-91 and has shops on the sides of its structure.: Inside Saint Mark's Basilica you see this sample of the Byzantine architecture, floors, etc., for this church that was consecrated in 1071.: The Bridge of Sighs connects the Palazzo Ducale or Doge’s Palace with the prison. The name comes from the “sighs” prisoners made after a trial and seeing the last visions of light before being lead off to their cells.:
Scorpiorose Posted February 21, 2011 Author #14 Share Posted February 21, 2011 Great pictures... the reality is we will most likely have until 3:00, we sail at 5:00. Does anyone know what the last time is you can embark? Anyway so we'll have until after lunch at least.....AND one night in Venice.....thinking we'll arrive around supper time... NOW what to do in Venice at NIGHT.....:p

NOW what to do in Venice at NIGHT.....:p THANKS for the nice comment on the pictures. Give Venice the credit for being so beautiful! On the departure time for when you need to back ON THE SHIP, that's going to depend on your cruise line and their rules. Some will say a hour before 5 pm. Other will have times of 30, 90 or 120 minutes. AND, being "near" the ship is not the same as being "ON" the ship. For evenings in Venice, "just walking around" is great. Below is a visual on a wonderful place where we had dinner. Plus, the "battle of the bands" on the main square is a must. Enjoy! This is a wonderful evening activity, especially as the day-time crowds and masses have departed and you can better enjoy this historic city in a more casual manner.: Along a canal, this is Da Raffaelle where we had an outdoor table right next to the waterway. Wonderful food and spectacular setting. It is located at Ponte delle Ostreghe 2347. It is west of San Marco Square and south of La Fenice Opera House.: In Venice, this shows boats in the harbor in front of St. Mark's with the famed Basilica of St Mary of Health in the background. The church was designed in the Palladian style and construction began in 1631. The dome of "the Salute" is an important part of the Venice skyline and it inspired artists such as Canaletto, J. M. W. Turner and John Singer Sargent to make it a key symbol of this historic city.: This Venice picture gives a sample of different roof designs/decorations, the church dome and the famed Campanile. This bell tower of St Mark's Basilica is 323 feet tall and is a plain brick square shaft, 39 feet wide on each side. This tower reached its present form in 1514, but was reconstructed in 1912 after the 1902 collapse.: Here are many boats docked along the Riva Degli Schiavoni that runs east of the Doge's Palace.:

disneygal94 Posted February 21, 2011 #17 Share Posted February 21, 2011 Terry, great pictures! I've been looking for a restaurant in Venice on the night of our arrival because it will be my sister's birthday. I went to the Ristorante da Raffaele's website and it looks awesome, but they don't list any prices. Can you tell me how expensive the restaurant is? Are reservations needed? Thanks! D&N LUV 2 TRAVEL Posted February 21, 2011 #18 Share Posted February 21, 2011 Terry, thanks for the great pics. With regards to restaurants do you have a list or know of the ones that are reasonably priced ? I realize we are in Venice and will pay for that, but there must be some restaurants that are good value for the money. I do not mind spending the money at a nice restaurant for one night but not the others.
Scorpiorose Posted February 21, 2011 Author #19 Share Posted February 21, 2011 later in the evening are there walk up restaurants that do not require a reservation? Back places that you can go in and have a nicer less expensive meal?

YES!! Walking around in Venice is fun. Even "getting lost" a little can be interesting for what you stumble across, see, etc. The picture below is an example of a small mask shop we discovered on such a little wandering trip. Most signs will always point you back to either Piazza San Marco or Rialto Bridge. THANKS! Enjoy!
