What's the strangest thing you've ever seen on a cruise?

On our very first cruise in the late 70s, we saw an older woman in a TIGHT spandex outfit that featured tiger stripes. It might not have been so tight if she hadn't been so well endowed. She wore it several times during the cruise. We still laugh about "tiger lady".

 

Once at the pool, a lady decided to change from her suit to a muumu type dress without leaving her lounger. Unfortunately, not all the things that should have stayed covered remained covered.

 

On Orient Beach, we learned the truth of the phrase "just because you can doesn't mean you should". UGH!!!

While this wasn't strange, I found it to be very charming. It was on a Western Caribbean cruise in January. We were on the Carnival Conquest with a group of people from a Victorian society. They often dressed in the full Victorian era garb. One couple from Colorado would enter the dance floor in the main lobby and dance beautifully every time the pianist played "Edelweiss".

Midnight departure after a full day in San Juan, two very drunk guys sprinting (at least attempting to) and screaming down the pier with their significant others (we hoped anyway) flung over their shoulders like a sack of potatoes as they were pulling in the gangway.

 

On another cruise, we went through one set of locks in the Panama Canal with a submarine from Chile in the lock beside us.

Right before dinner on a formal night they had a Not So Newlywed Game in a small lounge. Recently married #1 American couple, #2 middle aged American Couple and #3 an older South American couple that spoke in an accent. They had the men leave the room and asked the women "What is your husband's favorite condiment?"

 

Lady #1: Ketchup

Lady #2: Mayonnaise

Lady #3: Trojan

 

At this point we all were laughing so hard my mascara was starting to run. But everyone totally lost it when the husbands were brought back in and believe it or not Husband #3 matched his wife's answer.

We have seen lots of strange things but one we still talk about is the short Asian couple on a cruise about 18 months ago who wore flashing red horns on their heads all the time. They were really having a great time but none of us could figure out the purpose or meaning of the horns. Just strange.....

Our second cruise, on the Brilliance some years back when she was sailing a "Circle the Caribbean" itinerary ... an elderly gentleman, and a younger lady who claimed to be his daughter, both entering the hot tub in their underwear. They both claimed to not realize that cruise ships had swimming pools & hot tubs, and they had to improvise.

 

The word "Gross" would be the understatement of the year.

I don't know which surprises me more, a sub went through the locks with a cruise ship, on purpose I assume, or that Chile has a submarine.

To clarify, the submarine was in the adjacent lock chamber next to us, not in the same chamber. And yes they have at least one submarine.

The wife and I were at a Crown & Anchor meet the captain function. Formal night, everyone dressed nice, free drinks etc. Upscale event. We were seated in a lounge type area with two other couples making small talk. There were hors devours and one of the men had been eating crabcake or something like that. He took a bite and returned his plate to the coffeetable. One of the ladies (total stranger to the man) says "you aint gonna finish that? I love those" and proceeds to grab it and finish eating it. It was gross at the time, but we still laugh about it years later.

Once we were at Coco Cay. When we were walking up to the dining venue, we noticed a young boy with long hair standing in line ahead of us. I mentioned to my husband that he seemed to be wearing quite a small speedo or some type of bikini bottom. When he turned around it turned out to be a she and she was topless except for two pasties over her nipples. :eek:

 

Then there was the time we were at the beach in Hati and saw a guy wearing a thong that was skimpier than the girl he was with. He seemed to be upset at the onlookers pointing and laughing. I was impressed that he didn't have any tan lines. :p

DW and I were on Serenade in Jan 2010. We were watching the Hairy Leg contest by the pool. The first 3 guys did the normal dancing and posing. The fourth guy comes up, does his dance and then turns around and makes like he's going to pull his swimtrunks down but stops there.

 

Finally this skinny 75 year old guy who's feeling no pain comes out and does his dance, then faces everybody, gives a look of surprise and then yanks his swim suit right down to his ankles.

 

Gotcha! It turns out he's got a pair of Depends on under his trunks (which were soaked to the gills)! What an awful sight!

 

It took a few minutes before Belle the young Australian Activities Director was able to regain her composure.

After just boarding a Carnival ship observed a family board with buckets (more than 1) of Kentucky Fried Chicken. With all of the food on board I found it strange to see them bringing on more food, but I don't recall ever seeing "fried chicken" on any of my cruises.

 

No big mystery.

Everyone knows that the Colonel does chicken right.;)

 

There is a certain Carnival cruise director (Ralph) than has an affinity for KFC. It is very common for fellow CCer's to bring some back to the ship for him. My last cruise on the Conquest HostMach asked us to do so.

My DW and I and another couple were on a RCL cruise last January (2010) and a women who was maybe late 60's early 70's was in a motorized scooter zipping around with a small lap dog in her lap. We saw them at the pool, in the theater, at the casino and eventually in the MDR. Being a medical professional I was just a bit concerned about the health implications in the MDR so I asked the maître d about it and was told it was a service dog and she had papers from her doctor and actually paid extra to bring it on board. I was more used to larger dogs as service dogs but I guess this little guy was serving his purpose.

 

The best event was formal night when the little guy showed up on her lap in a custom made tuxedo....

Definitely the hairless, elderly, very tan gentleman (think George Hamilton in 30 years), had to be 80 years old with a 20-something woman who HAD to be a hooker. 3" hot pink nails, huge ta-ta's, big hair, in a thong out by the pool. I need to find my pic.....

Carnival's Dream a few years ago, I was just walking around really late at night and seen a couple in the glass elevator really going to town. A few days later at the love and marriage show the CD asked a young couple the stragest place you've made whoope. You guessed it in the glass elevator late last night.:D

On our December Navigator, a grown woman passenger, who appeared sane otherwise, wore Pajamas and big animal slippers everywhere, all day (she did change out to different PJs - although they mostly looked flannel). She wore them to breakfast; she wore them to line dancing and trivia; she wore them drinking cocktails, and she wore them in the prominade (and thats just the places I saw her.) Now that was very strange. It didn't bother me either - its her vacation.

 

 

Maybe her luggage got lost:eek:. The "strangest" think I ever saw was this guy wearing a thong speedo (didn't know they made them) on Majesty. On the front was the American flag. His behind was so flat that every time he walked, I thought the thong was going to come out. Not only was he a member of the noassatall club, he was the prez.:eek::D

I don't attend the pool games any more - but I do enjoy watching the replays on TV late at night or while getting ready in the morning. We were watching the previous day's activities when a familiar face appears. He says where he's from. Yep - our hometown. They asked him what he did and I waited for him to respond that he was a manger of a fast food joint in town. He looks at the camera and says "I'm the Sheriff". :eek:

 

We laughed ourselves silly and began referring to him as Barney Fife. We made a point to avoid him throughout the cruise. We watched the TV every day though and he participated in everything. A couple days after we got home, we dropped into the restaurant and - of course - he was behind the counter. I walked up to him and said "How's it going... Sheriff?" He nearly crapped his pants. To this day, he'll still turn beet red when he sees us walk into the restaurant.

Travis Barker and others from the rock band Blink 182 were on the same transatlantic crossing as me last September. To be honest, I always thought he was a bit of an arrogant jerk, based on nothing more than his public profile.

 

But then I saw him with his kids. Being a dad. And a quiet, normal guy. And being courteous and friendly toward people who came up to him. Totally blew me away how different he is in reality.

 

The absolute oddest thing I ever saw on a cruise ship was him in all his heavily-tattooed glory curled up in a chair in the library reading something on his laptop, surrounded by a half-dozen grey-headed retirees in their butterfly sweatshirts and velour track pants, also quietly reading.

they may not have realized the ship had a pool, but apparently they didn't realize it had a gift shop to buy swimsuits either!
