ksat Posted March 27, 2011 #1 Share Posted March 27, 2011 We just booked the Spirit for Alaska Aug 30th. Have been to the ports of call board but it was not really helpful. I am looking for suggestions for economical excursions in Skagway, Ketchican, and Juneau. We have our daughter's wedding in November so don't want to get too extravagant. Any info would be appreciated.
jenjens1023 Posted March 27, 2011 #2 Share Posted March 27, 2011 Do some more digging on the ports of call boards. I got tons of info there two years ago when we went to Alaska. But here's what we did... Katchikan...we weren't in port long so we just walked around town and went to the totem pole museum. Juneau...took a boat to Sawyer glacier. Booked through Adventure Bound. Skagway...took the narrow gauge RR to the Yukon, with return trip in a bas like rental car companies shuttle you in. Amazing trip with beautiful scenery and a very close up view of a black bear. We booked through Chilkoot tours. Have a great trip...and keep checking those boards...

It's there.
realmccoy Posted March 27, 2011 #5 Share Posted March 27, 2011 In Skagway and Ketchikan we rented a car in both ports. In Skagway we drove the Yukon to Emerald Lake and back and went sight seeing. We picked up some sandwhiches from the Starbucks in town...total cost for rental, gas and lunch was under $140. In Ketchikan we did the same thing and visited the Totem Pole National Parks and had lunch at Burger Queen. Day cost less than $120.
Quilting_Cruiser Posted March 27, 2011 #6 Share Posted March 27, 2011 There's a ton of information on the Alaska board. It just takes a little searching. Here are some threads about inexpensive excursions to get you started: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1289896 http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1344761 http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1344123 http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1336020 The Spirit is our favorite ship. In June, we'll be on her for the fourth time! :D
lindan1020 Posted March 27, 2011 #7 Share Posted March 27, 2011 In Ketchikan the Lumbarjack show was enjoyable as a low cost excursion. When we went in Sept one year it was raining and a bit cold but there are heaters out there and you are undercover. We saw the show then walked around and shopped for awhile. In Juneau there is a Tram that is fun also. http://alaska.org/juneau/mt-roberts-tramway.jsp http://lumberjackshows.com/?q=taxonomy/term/
