Has anyone just taken a taxi tour in Nassau?

Has anyone just taken a taxi tour in Nassau? It seems like everyone does the beach or atlantis, but we want to see the island.

If you did do a taxi tour, did you find a company beforehand or just wing it when you got there? What did you see?

From a recent review of the NCL Jewel I posted:

1. Nassau-----we booked the Blue Lagoon Dolphin Observation for $43 each online through NCL. We were expecting to stand on a platform and watch tourists interact with these great mammals. Nowhere in the excursion description did it mention that at least 1 member of your party had to participate in a dolphin swim ($230 pp) or dolphin encounter ($150 pp). We found this to be the case in the printed excursion brochure the night before. Fortunately we were able to cancel the excursion. For $230 or $150 that better be a helluva swim or hug with the dolphins! If we are to spend that sum of money, it’s going to a dolphin conservation program.

We decided to walk around Nassau for the afternoon but as luck would have it, we met a tour operator at the end of the pier named Dan the Man. For $30 pp he drove us and 2 other couples around the island in an AC van for 2 ½ hours. We learned a lot about the history of the Bahamas, visited the Queen’s Steps and Atlantis (casino only), and saw some poverty. There were several school groups of various ages visiting the Queen’s Steps and let me tell you they could teach us Americans the art of politeness. Well done Bahamians! If you are lucky enough, have Dan the Man give you a tour. You won’t go wrong. Note: Dan the Man should not be confused with the assistant cruise director, who goes by the same moniker and has quite a lovely singing voice, which you will discover at the crew talent show.

Thank you! That's exactly what we were hoping to do! I'll keep my eye out for dan the man(:

Another driver who used to be highly recommended here was "Otis" sometimes spelled "Ottis." A search here will reveal his cell phone number. I haven't seen any comments about him in some time though.

Many folks have picked a cabby for a tour right at the pier, and had a marvelous time. We were too early for Ottis, and didn't want to wait. A charming and funny cabby convinced us to go with him. He goes by the name of a character from Dr. Seuss, who happens to like Green eggs and Ham. Anyway, it was a terrible tour. We didn't go to the Queen's staircase, or Fincastle. We zoomed around the island with him enthusiastically pointing out strip malls. Then we stopped at a Starbucks, where he admonished us all to stay in the car. Meanwhile, he walked behind the store to deliver a small brown paper bag to someone. God only knows what was in the bag. Maybe bagels? But I doubt it.

Bottom line, go with a driver someone mentions here as being good.
