What to do?

My family and I (four of us, with two teens ages 14 and 18) will be stopping at St. Maarten/St. Martin, on our Golden Princess cruise, departing on 6/23/04.

Could anyone give us some advice on things to do on the island (we're interested in doing things on our own, as opposed to through a ship tour)? Any good beaches? Snorkeling? If you could guestimate how much this would cost us per person, including transportation, it would be of great help!!!
