elcano Posted April 12, 2011 #1 Share Posted April 12, 2011 Has anyone made a trip to Dry Tortugas N.P. ( Fort Jefferson ) from Key West?. Is it possible to make it during a one day cruise ship call in K.W.?
jeffbrig Posted April 12, 2011 #2 Share Posted April 12, 2011 What are your port hours? There aren't any planes making the dry tortugas run anymore, so you have to take a ferry. It's 2+ hours each way, leaves early in the morning (7:15 checkin, 8am departure), and returns to Key West around 5-5:30. Very unlikely that this will fit in to a port call window. Definitely it will be impossible to make it from a cruise... Thought of Majesty OTS ( from 10:00 am to 18:00 pm ). Obviously it is better to get there with more time. Did you enjoyed the place? Thanks for your valuable information, jeffbrig.
jeffbrig Posted April 13, 2011 #4 Share Posted April 13, 2011 I actually haven't been to the dry tortugas yet. My wife and I usually spend a weekend or two in Key West each year, and this is something we've always talked about doing. I've looked into it a couple of times, but we haven't actually gone there yet.
peter_krynicki Posted April 13, 2011 #5 Share Posted April 13, 2011 Seaplanes of Key west is flying out to the Tortugas. One morning one afternoon, and one all day trip. Very pricey. Pjk
bhopal21 Posted April 13, 2011 #6 Share Posted April 13, 2011 Actually it is now Key West Seaplanes http://keywestseaplanecharters.com/ Little different operation but accomplishes the same thing. It is one of those trips of a lifetime and well worth the money. Mike:)

peter_krynicki Posted April 15, 2011 #8 Share Posted April 15, 2011 IMO, if you take the seaplane, bight the cost bullet and go for the all-day trip. This will give you time to walk around the fort on the inside, once on top of the walls for the views in the four directions, and once around it on the moat. Then you can have time to swim or snorkel. A view from one of the walls And just before landing Unfortunately you can no longer walk out to Bird Key. Hurricane Wilma wiped out the drift of sand to there. Pjk

tikichic11 Posted May 3, 2011 #10 Share Posted May 3, 2011 Love the Dry Tortugas and the snorkeling there is fab. We did the ferry out and had a great ride but don't see how you can do that with limited port time.
BWDscotty Posted May 9, 2011 #11 Share Posted May 9, 2011 Sooner or later... a visit to Key West should include the ferry ride out to Ft J. A trip to remember! Bring your snorkel gear.
